CHAPTER I. But Kimberley was not the only man in the world who was breaking his heart for a woman. He was not even the only man in the world who was breaking his heart about Lady Ella Santerre. Jack Clare had had times as heavy as those through which the little millionnaire had passed, with this added bitterness—that whereas Kimberley had only been forced to despise himself, Clare had been compelled to despise the woman he loved, and had once thought (as lovers have a knack of thinking) something scarcely mortal. Yet this bitter mood never lasted long with him,
