TO THE THIRD EDITION.
The rapid exhaustion of two editions of this work, the flattering testimony of the profession, and the opinions expressed by the medical press of this country, as well as by the Continental and American journals, are most gratifying to me, as affording evidence that my labours for the alleviation of human suffering, in directing the attention of the profession to the symptoms, causes, and treatment of an important class of diseases, which has hitherto been but superficially noticed by surgical writers generally, and but imperfectly understood by many of the profession, have not been unsuccessful.
For nearly twelve months the second edition of the work has been out of print; and I regret that professional demands on my time have not admitted the preparation of a third edition for the press at an earlier period.
