I. Translate:

LIVY. BOOK XXI.

(a) Dum ea Romani parant consultantque, jam Saguntum summa vi oppugnabatur. Civitas ea longe opulentissima ultra Iberum fuit, sita passus mille ferme a mari. Oriundi a Zacyntho insula dicuntur, mixtique etiam ab Ardea Rutulorum quidam generis: cæterum in tantas brevi creverant opes, seu maritimis, seu terrestribus fructibus, seu multitudinis incremento, seu sanctitate disciplinæ, qua fidem socialem usque ad perniciem suam coluerunt. Hannibal, infesto exercitu ingressus anes, pervastatis passim agris, urbem tripartito aggreditur. Angulus muri erat in planiorem patentioremque, quam cætera circa, vallem vergens adversus eum vineas agere instituit, per quas aries mofibus admoveri posset: sed ut locus procul muro satis æquus agendis vineis fuit, ita haudquaquam prospere, postquam ad effectum operis ventum est, coeptis succedebat: et turris ingens imminebat, et murus, ut in suspecto loco, supra cæteræ modum altitudinis emunitus erat; et juventus delecta, ubi plurimum periculi ac laboris ostendebatur, ibi vi majore obsistebant.

What case is passus, and why? Explain the mood of posset. Parse and derive incremento, tripartite. Explain what vineae were.

(6) Hannibal, Sagunto capto, Carthaginem novam in hiberna concesserat: ibique, auditis quæ Romæ quæque Carthagine acta decretaque forent, seque non ducem solum, sed etiam causam esse belli, partitis divenditisque reliquiis prædæ, nihil ultra differendum ratus, Hispani generis milites convocat. "Credo ego vos," inquit, "socii, et ipsos cernere, pacatis omnibus Hispaniæ populis, aut finiendam nobis militiam exercitusque dimittendos esse, aut in alias terras transferendum bellum: ita enim hæ gentes non pacis solum sed etiam victoriæ bonis florebunt, si ex aliis gentibus prædam et gloriam quæremus. Itaque, cum longinqua ab domo instet militia, incertumque sit, quando domos vestras, et quæ cuique ibi cara sunt, visuri sitis, si quis vestrum suos invisere vult, commeatum do. Primo vere, edico, adsitis; ut, Diis bene juvantibus, bellum ingentis gloriæ prædæque futurum incipiamus." Omnibus fere visendi domos oblata ultro potestas grata erat, et jam desiderantibus suos, et longius in futurum providentibus desiderium. II. Sketch briefly the course of the second Punic war to Hannibal's arrival at Cannae.

III. Translate into Latin Prose:

At that time there came a strange woman to the king and offered him nine books of the prophecies (oraculum) of the Sibyl for a certain price. When the king refused them (aspernari), the woman went and burnt (comburere) three of the books, and came back and offered the six at the same price which she had asked for the nine; but they mocked at her and would not take the books. Then she went away and burnt three more, and came back and asked still the same price for the remaining (reliquus) three. At this the king was astonished, and asked of the augurs what he should do. They said that he had done wrong in refusing the gift of the gods and bade him by all means to buy the books that were left. So he bought them, and the woman who sold them was seen no more from that day forward.

EURIPIDIS MEDEA. HERODOTI LIB. V. c. 1-15.

1. Briefly sketch the argument of the Medea.

2. Translate :

(α) ΜΗ. Φεϋ φεῦ, οὐ νῦν με πρῶτον, ἀλλὰ πολλάκις, Κρέον,
ἔβλαψε δόξα, μεγάλα τ' εἴργασται κακά.

χρὴ δ ̓ οὔποθ ̓, ὅστις ἀρτίφρων πέφυκ' ἀνὴρ,
παῖδας περισσῶς ἐκδιδάσκεσθαι σοφούς.
χωρὶς γὰρ ἄλλης ἧς ἔχουσιν ἀργίας,
φθόνον πρὸς ἀστῶν ἀλφάνουσι δυσμενή.
σκαιοῖσι μὲν γὰρ καινὰ προσφέρων σοφὰ
δόξεις ἀχρεῖος κοὐ σοφὸς πεφυκέναι.
τῶν δ' αὖ δοκούντων εἰδέναι τι ποικιλον
κρείσσων νομισθεὶς λυπρὸς ἐν πόλει φανεῖ.
ἐγὼ δὲ χαὐτὴ τῆσδε κοινωνῶ τύχης.
σοφὴ γὰρ οὖσα, τοῖς μέν εἰμ ̓ ἐπίφθονος,

τοῖς δ ̓ αὖ προσάντης. εἰμὶ δ ̓ οὐκ ἄγαν σοφή.
σὺ δ ̓ οὖνφοβεῖ με, μή τι πλημμελὲς πάθῃς.

οὐχ ὧδ ̓ ἔχει μοι (μὴ τρέσῃς ἡμᾶς), Κρέον,
ὥστ ̓ εἰς τυράννους ἄνδρας ἐξαμαρτάνειν.

Explain the genitive fs. Derive ἀρτίφρων, προσάντης, πλημμελές. (3) ΑΙ. Η γὰρ τετόλμηκ ̓ ἔργον αἴσχιστον τόδε ;
