Your poor bedesmen the Prior and Convent of Christ Church in Canterbury, who are under your protection and owe their foundation to your most noble forefathers (whom God absolve) humbly pray; that, whereas the predecessors of the said suppliants, by request of your most noble forefathers, in times past, have given and granted to divers persons, severally, two corrodies to be received from the said Church; that is to say, one of them a pension of twenty marks to be annually received in money, and the other a maintenance for a man, which in some years is estimated to be of the annual value of five marks, and in others of eight marks, at the utmost of ten marks when provisions are dear. Wherefore your most noble grandfather (whom God absolve), through the great devotion which he felt towards the glorious Martyr St. Thomas, who is translated into the said Church, and through the affection which he bore towards the reverend Father in God John Stratford of happy memory Archbishop of Canterbury, by his letters patent conceded to the then Prior and Convent of the same Church, that the gifts and grants of pensions, corrodies, or maintenances, made by the said Priour and Convent or by their predecessors, to be received from their said Church, at the request of your said grandfather or of his forefathers, should not thenceforth be repeated as a custom or succession; and that the said gifts and grants should not be prejudicial to the said Prior and Convent, nor to their successors, nor to their said Church; and that the said Prior and Convent and their successors should not be bound or compelled

against their will to grant any such pensions, corrodies, or maintenances, to be received from the said Church, at the request of your said grandfather or his heirs; as is more fully contained in the said letters patent of indemnity. Notwithstanding this, your said grandfather sent an order to Robert formerly Prior of the said Church, to grant to Nicholas Wayte the maintenance-corrody aforesaid, and since the death of the said Nicholas your said grandfather sent an order to Richard late Prior of the said Church to grant the said corrody of maintenance to his servant John Kent, which John is still alive; and still farther (to grant) to John Herlyns the above-named pension of twenty marks, to be received yearly from the said Church; which Nicholas, and John, and John, were received into these situations at his request. And since the death of the said John Herlyns you yourself, most exalted and most excellent Lord, sent your most gracious letters to John late Prior of the said Church, (requiring) him to grant to Lambert Fermor the aforesaid pension of twenty marks, to be received yearly from the said Church; which Lambert at your request was admitted to this pension, contrary to the tenor of the said letters patent of indemnity. Wherefore may it please your most exalted, most excellent, and most dread Lordship to grant, on behalf of yourself and your heirs, that the said gifts and grants made of the said pensions, corrodies, and maintenances, by the said suppliants and their predecessors, to be received from their said Church, at the request of your said grandfather and his forefathers, or of your own most excellent self, may not henceforth be repeated as a custom or succession; and that they may not be prejudicial in time to come to the said suppliants, nor to their successors, nor to their said Church; and that the said suppliants and their successors, from this time forth, may not be bound, urged, or compelled, to give, grant, or pay the said pensions, corrodies, and maintenances, nor any other allowance, to be received from the
