To all those who shall see or hear these present letters, Roger of Thornton, Mayor of the town of Newcastle upon Tyne, greeting in God. Whereas it is charitable and a meritorious thing to bear witness to the truth; therefore I testify by these letters, that one Gerard Merseman, master and owner of the ship called The Behoudenreys of Owdewater in Holland, came before me, on the day of the making of these presents, and acknowledged and said, that a certain Godekyn Bukantyne of Dantzic with his fellows came lately across him and his ship in the Sound of Norway, at a port named Sandford, and there, out of the same ship took bales of woollen cloth, and worsteds, coverlids, English frieze cloth, arms and other harness, being the goods of John Gaunt, Richard Bawtry, and Henry Hyndley, of the City of York, and others their partners, with which (goods) the said Gerard was laden.
