Excerpt from The Signs of the Times: In a Series of Eight Lectures

The lord reigneth. He who created this World and placed man upon it, proposed to aecom plish great ends, worthy of Himself. He is now exercising a Providential control over individuals, and over nations, for the accomplishment of those ends. The time cannot be distant, when great chan ges are to take place amongst the nations. It is our wisdom, therefore, both to examine carefully and prayerfully the prophecies whose fulfilment is yet future, and to watch passing events, which throw light upon those prophecies. It is a great misfortune to mistake the character of the age in which we live, and to fail to understand the signs which God gives, that his people may act with Him their part.

The Lectures, which the author now ventures to Offer to the public, excepting the Sixth, were delivered to his church, during the last winter, in the course of his regular ministrations. They were attended through out by very crowded audiences; and many who sought to hear them, were not able to find seats, and were obliged to retire. The favor with which they were received, and the anxiety expressed by many at a distance to see them, have led to the conclusion, that the publication Of them might perhaps contribute to the promotion of truth, and to the awakening of Christians to an appreciation Of their responsibilities and their privileges in this eventful day. With the prayer, that the blessing of God may attend them, they are now placed before the public.
