the Senate, to lay upon the table of the respective Senators the maps of such counties as have been already published.

Mr. Niles offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Resolved, That the committee on the judiciary inquire into the expediency of revising the law for taking recognizances in criminal cases, as to require those who propose to enter bail, to be possessed of real estate, and that the recognizance be a lien upon the same, and they report by bill or otherwise.

Mr. Wilson gave notice that he shall on some future day ask leave to propose an amendment to the constitution providing for biennial sessions of the legislature.

Mr. Howell gave notice that on some future day he shall ask leave to introduce a bill for the more effectual regulation of grist and flour ing mills.

Mr. Turner gave notice that at some future day he will ask leave to bring in a bill granting to residents the privilege to pay their delinquent highway taxes in labor upon the road.

The President announced the following message from the Hous of Representatives:

SIR-I am instructed by the House of Representatives, to transmit to the Senate a joint resolution relative to the construction of a ship canal around the falls of St. Marie, which the House have passed, and do respectfully ask the concurrence of the Senate therein. A. W. HOVEY,

Mr. Starkey called up from the table the report of the committee on rules.

The first amendment proposed by the committee was concurred in. The 2nd amendment was non-concurred in.

The 3d amendment to rule 30, was non-concurred in by the following vote:

Mr. Green offered the following amendment, to the amendment proposed by the committee, which was concurred in.

"Strike out in the 1st line of rule 35, the words "the House of Representatives," and insert the words "either House."

And the proposed amendment as amended was then adopted.
The amendment proposed to rule 39 was concurred in.

The amendment proposed to rule 15, was non-concurred in, by the following vole:

Mr Howell moved a reconsideration of the vote, by which the Senate refused to adopt the amendment proposed by the committee, to rule 30, which motion did not prevail, by the following vote:

The Senate was called to order by the President.
Prayer by the Rev. J. S. Harrison.

The journal of yesterday was read and approved.

Mr. Howell presented the petition of Dominique Rowe and James Rowe, guardians to Joseph and Gregorie St. Bernard, for power to sell real estate and invest proceeds for minors; which was referred to the committee on the judiciary.

Mr. Green, from the committee on the judiciary, to whom was yesterday referred the House resolution relative to the construction of a canal around the falls of St. Mary, reported the same back with the following amendments:

Amend the first resolution by striking out the word "past," in the sixth line, and inserting in the place thereof the word "around;" and also by adding, at the end thereof, as follows: "by the United States, or if congress shall refuse to authorize the construction of such canal by the United States, that then they earnestly endeavor to procure the passage of a law ceding to this state a sufficient quantity of government lands for that purpose."

Also, amend the second resolution by striking out the word " required," in the second line thereof, and inserting the word "requested," in its place; also, insert between the words "the" and "membors," in the third line, the words, "senators and;" also, strike out the word "in," at the end of the third line, and insert the word "of," in the place thereof, and add at the end of said second resolution, the words, "in the congress of the United States."

Mr. Cust moved that the resolution and proposed amendments be recommitted to the committee on the judiciary, with instructions to amend the same, so that "Congress be solicited to make an appropriation to enable the state of Michigan to construct the canal," which motion did not prevail by the following vote:

Mr. Starkey moved to refer the resolution and amendments to the

committee on state affairs, which motion prevailed.

Mr. Shearer offered the following resolution which was adopted: Resolved, That the messengers be directed to leave each morning a copy of the journal at the office of the Secretary of State and with the Executive.

Mr. Pratt gave notice that, he will on some future day, ask leave to bring in a bill, to amend an act entitled "an act to provide for the assessment and collection of taxes," approved March 8, 1843.

Also, to amend an act, entitled "an act to provide for the issuing and return of veniries, the payment of jurors, the, appointment of circuit court commissioners, and for other purposes. Approved March 9, 1843.

Also to amend the act entitled "an act to provide for the equitable settlement of the estate of deceased persons." Approved March 8, 1843.

Mr. Patterson called up his joint resolution relative to furnishing copies of rules to Senators and Representatives, which was read twice and laid upon the table.

Mr. Turner in pursuance of previous notice, asked and obtained leave to introduce a bill.

The President appointed as a committee for that purpose Senators Turner and Niles, who reported a "bill to provide for the payment of resident delinquent highway taxes," which was read twice, laid upon the table and ordered to be printed.
