PREFACE.

HE EXHIBITIONS OF THE ROYAL IN

STITUTE OF PAINTERS IN WATER

COLOURS have now reached their

Sixty-sixth Anniversary.

The last Exhibition was a notable one in their history, from the fact of the opening of the New Galleries in Piccadilly to all workers in Water Colour Art outside their own Membership.

The result of their first open Exhibition proved a complete and unqualified success. Upwards of five hundred works of non-members of the Royal

Institute were exhibited, of which a large proportion were placed in the prominent positions they deserved.

The Members congratulate themselves that, in every succeeding Exhibition, they will be in a position to devote a large portion of the space at their disposal for the Exhibition of non-members' works.

The Free Schools for the education of Students in the Art of Painting in Water Colours are established, and have been, for some months past, working with a full attendance. The Members of the Royal Institute in turn give their services gratuitously

as Masters in the Schools, and the progress of the Students during the past Session has been, for the most part, very satisfactory.
