SATURDAY, January 11th, 1840.

On motion of Mr. Baldwin,

Ordered, That the reading of the Journal this morning be dis persed with.

On motion of Mr. Baldwin,

A call of the House was made and the serjeant-at-arms sent af ter absent members.

The serjeant-at-arms having returned and reported the attendance of the members,

The House proceeded to business.

Mr. Shackelford, from the committee on enrolment, reported the following to be correctly enrolled, which were then signed by the Speaker, viz:

"Joint resolution calling upon the Secretary of the Territory for certain information,"

"Resolution relating to county seals."

"An act to provide for the support of common schools, and for other purposes."

"An act to provide for laying out a Territorial road from Fort Howard to Knaggs' ferry, in Brown county."

"An act relating to strays."

"An act relating to the duties of the register of deeds of the county of Rock."

"An act to establish the towns of Pewaukee and Granville, in the county of Milwaukee."

The Speaker laid before the House a message from the Execu tive, notifying the House that he had this day examined and approved, "An act to amend An act to provide for aiding in the construction of the Milwaukee and Rock river canal.""

Mr. Sholes, from the committee on printing, reported the following resolution, which was read the first and second time, viz : No. 20, "Resolution relative to printing the laws in the news. papers,"

Mr. Sholes presented a petition from citizens of Sheboygan

county, praying for the removal of the seat of justice of said county.

Laid on the table.

On motion of Mr. Conroe,

The resolution prohibiting new bills to be introduced was suspended for the purpose, and

Mr. Conroe, by unanimous consent, introduced the following bill, which was read the first and second time, viz:

No. 52, "A bill relative to the county officers of Sheboygan county."

On motion of Mr. Sholes,

The said bill was then read the third time, passed, and the title thereof agreed to; all rules prohibiting the same, being suspended for that purpose.

Ordered, That the concurrence of the Council be requested therein.

On motion of Mr. Wells,

The following bills and memorial, from the Council, were read the first and second time, viz:

No. 43, A, “A bill to incorporate the Blue Mounds mining, smelting and manufacturing company."

No. 43, "A bill supplementary to an act for assessing and collecting county revenue."

And,

No. 48, "A bill to authorize the county of Iowa to collect taxes due from the county of Dane, for the year 1838." No. 52, "A bill concerning actions relating to real proper. ty."

No. 9, "Memorial to Congress for appropriations of lands for manual labor colleges."

On motion of Mr. Billings,

The following bills from the Council were taken up sidered, viz :

On motion of Mr. Dewey,

Ordered, That bill No. 26 be recommitted to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Wells offered the following amendment to bill No. 37,.

viz:

Insert between the words "of," and "such," in the 17th line of section second, as follows, to wit: "1, all choses in action, debts due and moneys on hand of."

The amendment was adopted.

On motion,

Ordered, That the said bill be read a third time by its title

now.

The said bill was then read the third time, passed, and the title thereof agreed to.

Ordered, That the Council be requested to concur in said amendment.

On motion of Mr. Wells,

The House resolved itself into the committee of the whole, on the aforesaid bill, No. 26, Mr. Beardsley in the chair.

After a short time the committee rose, and reported the said bill to the House with amendments.

The amendments were agreed to, and the said bill ordered to be read the third time by its title now.

The said bill was then read the third time, passed, and the title thereof agreed to.

Ordered, That the clerk request the concurrence of the Coun. cil in the said amendment.

On motion of Mr. Sholes,

Ordered, That bill No. 27, entitled, "A bill to incorporate the stockholders of the Bank of Sinipee," be indefinitely postponed. On motion of Mr. Street,

The House resolved itself into the committee of the whole, Mr. Sholes in the chair, on bills of the following titles, (H. R. file,) to wit:

No. 49, “A bill to regulate the mode of petitioning the Legis. Jative Assembly."
