After a short time the committee rose, reported the progress made therein, and asked leave to sit again this afternoon.

Leave was granted.

Mr. Shackelford, from the committee on enrolment, reported the following to be correctly enrolled, which were then signed by the Speaker, viz:

"Resolutions relative to the southern boundary and the admis. sion of Wisconsin into the Union as a State."

"Memorial to Congress for appropriations for the improvement of the Fox, Wisconsin, and other rivers."

Mr. Street had leave to withdraw several accounts relating to printing.

Mr. Longstreet, from the committee on enrolment, reported that he did on this day present to the Governor, for his approval,

"An act to amend an act entitled, 'An act in addition to an act to establish the seat of government of the Territory of Wiscon sin, and to provide for the cicction of commissioners of public buildings, approved December 3d, 1886, and for other purposes,' approved March 8th, 1839.”

The Speaker laid before the House a message from the Gover nor, informing the House that he had this day approved “An act to amend an act entitled, An act in addition to an act to establish the seat of government of the Territory of Wisconsin, and to pro. vide for the election of commissioners of public buildings, approv ed December 3d, 1836, and for other purposes,' approved March 8th, 1839."

On motion of Mr. Street,

Ordered, That seats be prepared for the members of the Coun. cil in the Representives' Hall, preparatory to the election of commissioner of public buildings.

On motion of Mr. Sholes,

Resolved, That the chief clerk of this House be required to in form the Council, that seats had been prepared for its members in the Hall of this House, where their attendance is requested for the purpose of going into joint ballot for the election of a commis. missioner of public buildings, the hour having arrived as provided by law for the election.

Mr. Bracken presented a communication from William B. Slaughter, Secretary of the Territory, in answer to a resolution of the two Houses, calling on him for certain information.

The communication was read and laid on the table.

On motion of Mr. Sholes,

Ordered, That a teller be appointed on the part of the House. to act with such telier as may be appointed on the part of the Council, to canvass the votes of the two Houses for commissioner of public buildings.

The Speaker appointed Mr. Sholes teller on the part of the House.

CONVENTION OF THE TWO HOUSES.

The President and members of the Council having convened in the Representatives' Hall, the President stated the object of the Convention to be the election of a comissioner of public buildings, in pursuance of an act of the Legislative Assembly, and informed the Convention that Mr. Wells had been appointed the teller, on the part of the Council, to canvass the votes.

The Speaker informed the Convention that Mr. Sholes had been appointed the teller, on the part of the House of Representatives, for the same purpose.

A call of the names of the members of the Convention was then had, and it appeared that Messrs. Story and Brisbois were not in attendance.

The following nominations were then made :
Mr. Childs nominated Nathaniel C. Prentiss.
Mr. Longstreet nominated James L. Thayer.
Mr. Blackstone nominated Ezekiel Churchill,
On motion of Mr. Billings,

The Comvention proceeded to the election.

The ballots having been taken and counted, the tellers reported that there were thirty-seven votes given, of which Nathaniel C. Prentiss had received twenty-one, Ezekiel Churchill nine, and James L. Thayer seven.

The President thereupon, declared that Nathaniel C. Prentiss had been duly elected commissioner of public buildings.

On motion of Mr. Martin,

The Convention adjourned.

The House was then called to order by the Speaker.

On motion of Mr. Bracken,

Col. Slaughter had leave to withdraw the communication pre

sented by him in answer to a resolution of this House.

And then the House adjourned until 2 o'clock P. M.

AFTERNOON SESSION.

Two o'clock.

Mr. Sholes, the teller appointed on the part of this House, reported,

That Nathaniel C. Prentiss had been duly elected commissioner of public buildings, on joint ballot of the two Houses.

Mr. Shackelford, from the committee on enrolment, reported the following to be correctly enrolled, which was then signed by the Speaker, viz:

"An act to amend an act entitled, 'An act concerning the time of commencing actions.""

On motion of Mr. Story,

The House went into committee of the whole, Mr. Sholes in the chair, on the following bills, (H. R. file,) viz:

No. 42, "A bill in relation to United States roads in this Territory."

No. 49, "A bill to regulate the mode of petitioning the Legis. lative Assembly."

No. 50, "A bill to change the name of the town of Mentor, in the county of Milwaukee."

No. 51, "A bill to provide for the compensation of the officers of the Legislative Assembly."

And on the following bill from the Council, viz:

No. 48, "A bill to authorize the county of Iowa to collect taxes duc from the county of Dane, for the year 1838."

After some time the committee rose, reported the progress made therein, and asked leave to sit again.

Leave was granted.

Message from the Council by the secretary thereof:

"Mr. Speaker-The Council have concurred in the following bill and resolutions of this House, viz:

"No. 45, 'A bill concerning the duties of clerks of the boards of county commissioners.'

"No. 15, Joint resolution relating to the United States road leading from Racine to Sinipee.'

"No. 19, Resolution in addition to a resolution entitled, Resolution relating to the appointment of Samuel B. Knapp fiscal agent.'

"No. 17, Resolution concerning the settlement of the accounts of the late acting commissioner.'

"No. 16, 'Resolution relative to the expenses of the AdjutantGeneral's office.'

No. 18, Resolution relating to the clection of canal commissioners;' all with amendments, excepting resolution No. 15, in which amendments I am directed to request the concurrence of this House.

"They have also concurred in bill No. 52, of this House, ' A bill relative to the county officers of Sheboyagan county;' and have passed No. 12, Resolution authorizing the clerk of the supreme court of this Territory to keep his office in the capitol at Madison ;' in which I am directed to request the concurrence of this House.

"The Governor has notified the Council that he has, on this day, examined and approved the following acts, memorials and resolution, viz:

"An act to incorporate the Wisconsin lead mining, smelting and manufacturing company.'

"An act for the relief of Joseph R. Brown.'

"An act to provide for laying out and opening Territorial roads, and for other purposes.'

"An act to establish the county of Sauk, and to define its limits.'

"An act to amend an act to change the corporate limits and powers of the town of Milwaukee.'

"An act to provide for taking the census or enumeration of the inhabitants of this Territory, and to fix the time of holding an extra session of the Legislative Assembly.'

"Memorial to Congress for appropriations for Lake Michigan and Mississippi rail-road.'

"Memorial to Congress for an appropriation for survey and construction of a rail-road from Platteville to the Mississippi.' "Resolution to locate the university lands."
