Market Report. Toronto, Dec. 27.-The holidays are here, and business is light. Now we can look back on the operations of the year, which show much better results than those of '96 and '97, both in volume and prices. Even at the beginning there was a better feeling. No doubt the war stimulated prices for the time being in some articles, but it has not had any permanent effect. Opium has fluctuated under the usual reports of drought, frost, small sowings, etc., but the financial stringency in Turkey has been a powerful factor in keeping prices down. Quinine has fluctuated within very narrow limits during the year, but is about five per cent. dearer at the close, due to the advance paid for bark at the last Amsterdam sale. Quinine has been kept down by the stocks held in second hands, holders being eager to sell out in case of an advance. Acetanilide continues cheap and sometimes poor. Cod liver oil is not too firm. Carbolic acid quiet. Borax and boracic acid are much dearer, and still advancing. Ergot very scarce. Iodides and FOR SALE-One set of Drug shop fixtures, bromides are pretty well settled at the advanced prices. Mercury has advanced twice, but there is so far no change in mercurials. Sennas are held at stiff prices. Sodas are generally cheap, as well as their congener, chloride lime. Spices are meeting a good sale, with improving conditions. Epsom salts of good quality are hard to get, though common are plentiful enough. Castor oil is quiet for machinery grade; steady for medicinal. Camphor maintains the strong position recently developed. Linseed oil steady. Spirits turpentine very firm. White lead likely to advance again. Paris green offered low, both here and in New York.
