with the same order with which I place plants in a herbarium.

Mr. Monteith brought us a shell which he called, I believe, the antique fusus. He said he had frequently seen it used as a lamp in the Shetland Islands, and that it looks prettily with the wick burning in oil when suspended from the rustic ceiling. I begged him to tell me of Shetland. I like to see pictures, and to hear descriptions of the wild and rugged scenery of northern lands. I should like to sail among the fiords. of Norway, and skirt the savage coasts of Shetland. It would give me pleasure to behold those rocky ridges rising hundreds of feet above the boiling sea, which scoops out caverns not yet penetrated, by the eye of man. upon an ocean weed. It was like a mosaic brooch, with azure ground and pearly spots.

We saw some fishermen throwing their nets. We talked with them, and they told us they were getting sea-crabs for bait. They drew quantities of them to the shore. These old men made quite a picture with their red shirts, streaming hair, and naked feet half buried in the deep sand. Indeed everything becomes picturesque by the ocean-side. When I saw these men dragging their nets I thought of the disciples of old; of Peter, of James, and of

John. They were men of rude appearance whom our Saviour chose. It is not wonderful that the haughty Jews despised them. Would the elegantly-dressed ladies and consequential gentlemen at our hotel listen to a message from such as these? The fishermen seemed pleased with our our notice. They said, when they found that this was our first visit to the sea-shore, "Well, then, you never saw so big a pond before. You cannot see across it. But did you ever see the sun come out of it?"

We told him we had seen the sun rise. Then one asked: "Did you see him sup up the water?"

Upon inquiring his meaning, we found that he alluded to the golden path on the ocean, which the sun makes when he first rises.
