ANTHONY MESMER, whose acumen detected that truth of nature on which the science of Mesmerism has since been established, first saw the light at Mersburgh, in the year 1734. The powers of his mind were devoted to the study of the Art of Healing. He took his degree of doctor in the University of Vienna, in the year 1766; the subject of his inaugural thesis was the " Influence of the Planets on the Human Body." The master-hand of Chaucer sketched his likeness nearly five hundred years ago:

"With us there was a Doctour of Phisike,

In all this world ne was there non him like
To speke of phisike, and of surgerie ;
For he was grounded in astronomie.
He kept his patient a full great dell
In hourès by his magike naturell;
