CANAL COMMISSIONERS.

[The Canal Commissioners have the genera construction of new canals, and of the repairs canals.]

ADIN THAYER, Hoosick Falls-In charge of as follows, viz.: To extend from the south en basin to the east line of the county of Onei Champlain canal.

CHRISTOPHER A. WALRATH, Syracuse -- In Division, as follows, viz.: Erie canal, from the county of Oneida, to the easterly line of Wayne Lake canal; Oswego canal; Oneida River impro River towing-path; Baldwinsville canal; Cay canal; Crooked Lake canal; Chemung canal an inlet; Chenango canal and Black River canal.

JAMES JACKSON, Jr., Lockport - In charge of as follows, viz.: Erie canal, from the easterl county to the city of Buffalo and the Genesee V

VIVUS W. SMITH.

By chap. 321 of the Laws of 1870, jurisdiction was granted to the Canal Appraisers "to hear and determine all claims against the State of any and all persons and corporations for damages alleged to have been sustained by them from the canals of the State, or from their use and management, or resulting or arising from the negligence or conduct of any officer of the State having charge thereof, or resulting or arising from any accident or other matter or thing connected with the canals," subject to the provisions and restrictions specified in the act.

CANAL BOARD.

[The Canal Board is composed of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund, the Canal Commissioners and the State Engineer and Surveyor.

Meets at the Canal Department from time to time during the year; fixes the rates of tolls; appoints the collectors of tolls, engineers, canal superintendents, weigh masters and inspectors; hears appeals from Canal Appraisers; remits penalties, and regulates the police of the canals, etc.]

CANAL DEPARTMENT.

[Rooms in the State Hall, in which the business of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund and the Canal Board, and the business of the Auditor of the Canal Department, is required by law to be transacted.]

RESOLUTION IN REFERENCE TO CANAL CLAIMS.

IN SENATE, January 22, 1858.

Resolved, That all persons presenting claims for damages in all matters relating to the canals, before presenting the same to the Legislature, shall obtain from the Canal Department full printed or written information in relation to such claim, so far as in the knowledge of said department.
