Psalm CXIV.

Miracles attending Israel's Journey.

1 WHEN Israel out of Egypt came, And left the proud oppressor's land, Conducted by the great I AM,

Safe in the hollow of His hand; The LORD in Israel reign'd alone, And Judah was His favourite throne.

2 The sea beheld His pow'r, and fled, Disparted by His wondrous rod; Jordan ran backward to it's head,

And Sinai felt the incumbent GOD;
The mountains skipp'd like frighted rams,
The hills leap'd after them as lambs.

3 What ail'd thee, O thou trembling sea?
What horror turn'd the river back?
Was Nature's GOD displeas'd at thee?
And why should hills and mountains shake?
Ye mountains huge, who skipp'd like rams,
Ye hills, who leap'd as frighted lambs?

4 Earth, tremble on, with all thy sons,
In presence of thy awful LORD,
Whose pow'r invérted Nature owns,
Her only law His sovereign word:
He shakes the centre with a nod,
And Heaven bows down to Jacob's GOD.

5 Creation, varied by His hand,

The omnipotent JEHOVAH knows:
The sea is turn'd to solid land,
The rock into a fountain flows;
And all things, as they change, proclaim
Their LORD eternally the same.

Psalm CXVI.

Public Thanks and Vows.

1 WHAT shall I render to my GOD

For all His kindness shown?
My feet shall visit Thine abode,
My songs address Thy throne.

2 Among the saints, that fill Thine house,
My off'rings shall be paid;
There shall my zeal perform the vows
My soul in anguish made.

3 How much is mercy Thy delight,
Thou ever-blessed GOD!

How dear Thy servants in Thy sight!
How precious is their blood!

4 How happy all Thy servants are!
How great Thy grace to me!
My life, which Thou hast made Thy care,
LORD! I devote to Thee.

5 Now I am Thine, for ever Thine, Nor shall my purpose movę:

Thy hand hath loos'd my bands of pain, And bound me with Thy love.

6 Here in Thy courts I leave my vow,
And Thy rich grace record;

Witness, ye saints, who hear me now,
If I forsake the LORD.

Psalm CXVI.
CXVI.

Public Thanks and Vows.

1 FOR mercies, countless as the sands,
Which daily I receive

From JESUS my REDEEMER's hands,
My soul, what canst thou give?

2 Alas! from such a heart as mine
What can I bring Him forth?
My best is stain'd and dy'd with sin,
My All is nothing worth.

3 Yet this acknowledgment I'll make
For all He has bestow'd,
Salvation's sacred cup I'll take,
And call upon my GOD.

4 The best returns for one like me,
So wretched and so poor,
Is from His gifts to draw a plea,
And ask Him still for more.

5 I cannot serve Him as I ought,
No works have I to boast;
Yet would I glory in the thought
That I shall owe Him most.

6 This thought, when death's dark vale is past, Shall heav'nly bliss complete,

And ev'ry saint his crown shall cast
Beneath the SAVIOUR'S feet.

Psalm CXVII.

Universal Praise.

1 FROM all that dwell below the skies
Let the CREATOR's praise arise;
Let the REDEEMER'S Name be sung,
Through ev'ry land, by ev'ry tongue.

2 Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends Thy Word:

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

Psalm CXVIII.

Christ the only Foundation.

1 BEHOLD the sure foundation-stone,
Which GOD in Zion lays,

To build our heav'nly hopes upon,
And His eternal praise.

2 Chosen of GOD, to sinners dear,
And saints adore the Name,

They trust their whole salvation here,
Nor shall they suffer shame.

3 The foolish builders, scribe and priest,
Reject it with disdain;

Yet on this rock the church shall rest,
And envy rage in vain.

4 What though the gates of Hell withstood, Yet must this building rise:

'Tis Thine own work, almighty GOD! And wondrous in our eyes.

Psalm CXVIII.

The Lord's Day.—Resurrection.

THIS is the day the LORD hath made,
He calls the hours His own;
Let Heav'n rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.

2 To-day He rose, and left the dead,
And Satan's empire fell;

To-day the saints His triumph spread,
And all His wonders tell.

3 Hosannah to th' anointed King,
To David's holy son;

Help us, O LORD! descend and bring
Salvation from Thy throne.

4 Blest be the LORD, who comes to men With messages of grace;

Who comes in GOD His FATHER'S name To save our sinful race.

5 This guilty ruin'd world beneath,
By streaming blood to save;
And prove the value of His death,
By rising from the grave.

6 Hosannah in the highest strains
The church on earth can raise ;
The highest Heavens, in which He reigns,
Shall give Him nobler praise.
