Rt. Rev. D. B. Knickerbacker:

ST. PAUL, MINN., June 7th, 1894.

The Diocese of Minnesota sends greeting and thanks the Diocese of Indiana for their loving words and prays God to bless the labors of their Bishop to the glory of God and the welfare of the Holy Church.

ANDREW D. STOWE,

Secretary.

Wm. Mack reported for the Committee on Canons, that the matter presented in the paper of T. C. Moore, was of a nature that could only be acted upon by the General Convention, and that the subject be left to the Deputies to the next General Convention.

Rev. Walter Scott submitted the following:

Your Committee on the State of the Church respectfully submit the following report.

They have carefully gone over the Parochial Reports and find them to show diligent and faithful endeavors in all respects both material and spiritual. It is worthy of remark that great progress and growth should have been made in the present year of financial disaster. This is a ground of encouragement and our effort should be to maintain the same standard in the years to come. The open

ing and working of several new fields are due to the faithful efforts of the Archdeacon who has proved himself to be eminently well fitted for his difficult task.

The Woman's Auxiliary has been as ever before the mainstay of missionary work and it is earnestly to be desired that in every parish and mission there might be an active branch of this most excellent institution.

The Church Home for the aged and orphans is a venture of faith which is sure to justify itself in years to come and will without doubt prove to many an incalcuble blessing. We commend its liberal support to all Christian people in the Diocese.

The Howe Grammar School, Lima, and St. Mary's Hall, Indianapolis, have both had prosperous years and are doing their work most efficiently. We urge that Church people in the Diocese should do their best to encourage and uphold these institutions of Christian education by sending their children to them for training.

The Century Club has received many subscriptions but not all that was needed.

The Church Club is an effort in the right direction, which should tend to accentuate the individuality of the Diocese and help to break up parochialism and establish a bond of concord between the laity of the Church. This is a movement which we most cordially commend and hope it will receive the hearty endorsement of all the laity.

It is with peculiar favor that your committee have noticed this year several legacies for benevolent purposes, some of them by others than Churchmen. Every Churchman of ability should remember his spiritual mother in the testamentary disposition of his estate.

The year as a whole has been most favorable and affords splendid evidences of the devoted work of the Bishop of the Diocese in this first decade of his Episcopate, the diligence of the clergy and the hearty and helpful co-operation of the faithful lay people of Indiana.

WALTER SCOTT,
JAS. H. W. BLAKE,
W. H. BAMFORD,

Committee.

Rev. Lewis F. Cole submitted the following:

The Committee on Christian Education respectfully report that we note with pleasure the continued success and prosperity of our Diocesan schools, Howe Grammar School and St. Mary's Hall, earnestly commending them to the generous support of our Church people.

Our mother Church of England annually expends millions of dollars in this work and is stirred to her depths constantly in her efforts to maintain and increase her efficiency in Christian education. Every Churchman, and especially every Priest, should consider him.self a committee of one to forward this work. Other religious bodies are alive to its vital importance and if we do not educate the young, others are alive to their privileges and will gladly undertake this work.

The Church is every year letting many of her own children and many others go to schools where every influence will be brought to

bear upon them to bring them into folds alien to our dear Mother, the Church. We annually lose, in this way, a large percentage of young life and devotion.

The education of our people, in the distinctive principles of the Church, a very important element in our growth and life, is deserving of much consideration. It is suggested that a more general introduction of the current periodical literature of the Church into the homes of our Church people would be an important factor in this work.

Our Sunday-school work is noted, with pleasure, as increasing in interest, the Sunday-school Institute apparently having a wide influence in encouraging the zeal of our Sunday-school workers. Respectfully submitted,

L. F. COLE,

T. B. KEMP,
OTWAY COLVIN,

Committee.
