In describing the late Lord Beaconsfield's maiden speech in the House of Commons, the author winds up a depreciatory criticism in these words: "I doubt, however, if he will ever acquire any status in the House. Oxford, 1837 "As a man of profound learning, fervent piety, and practical philanthropy, his name should be had in everlasting remembrance. He was distinguished both as a Poet and as a Prose Writer, etc."-Allibone's Dictionary of English Literature. The author of the Sentimental Journey was much indebted to Bishop Hall. There is (says Dr. Ferriar, in his "Illustrations of Sterne") a delicacy of thought and tenderness of expression in the good Bishop's compositions, from the transfusions of which Sterne looked for immortality.
