To which are prefixed, An Account of the Life and Writings of Shakspeare, AND DR. JOHNSON's CELEBRATED PREFACE TO HIS EDITION IN TEN VOLUMES. VOL. I. London: PRINTED FOR OTRIDGE & RACKHAM, STRAND; SAMS, BOOKSELLER TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF YORK, MDCCCXXIV. Advertisement. Great care has been taken to render this edition of the Plays of Shakspeare as valuable as possible ; and for this purpose the text is not only accurately printed from the copy left corrected for the press by the late GEORGE STEEVENS, Esq. and printed in twentyone volumes, octavo, but MR. Rowe's Account of his Life and Writings is prefixed, as well as DR. JOHNSON'S celebrated Preface to his edition of our immortal Bard, printed in 1765. At the end of each play, DR. JOHNSON's remarks are also subjoined; and to render the mines of this inexhaustible author more easily explored, at the bottom of every page all obsolete words, or obscure sentiments, are explained by a Glossary, or by a Note as concise as possible. |
