Flee youth ful Lufts: but follow Righteoufnefs, Faith, Charity, Peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure Heart. 1 Pet. 3. 11. Seek peace, and enfue it. Rom. 14. 17. The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteoufnefs, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghoft. 1 Cor. 7. 15. God hath called us to peace. I Cor. 1. 33. God is not the Author of Confufion, but of peace.

(1) In the foregoing Verfes, our bleffed Lord fpeaks of the Ne ceffity of parting with our moft beloved Sins and Lufts, which he exprefies by cutting off a Right-hand, &c. And thefe Words are a farther Argument to perfwade men from finning; for every one that indulges his finful Lufts, and corrupt Affections, every wick ed and unreformed Perfon fhall be fo falted with Fire, as to endure for ever in a State of Torment: The Metaphor is taken from the known Property of Salt, which is to preferve Things from Corruption.

(1) Thefe Words are not to be understood literally. But the meaning of them feems to be, They fhall receive Blessings which are an hundred Times more Faluable than those they parted with for the fake of Chrift.

They fhall be more happy in the prefent Life, than they could have been if they had denied Chrift, and kept that which they parted with, befides the more abundant Happinefs they fhall be made partakers of in the World to come. Some underftand this Promife to have relation not only to fpiritual good Things, but likewife to Temporal, and that the Senfe of it is, that they fhall find men more affectionate towards them, who will love them better, take more Care of them, adminifter more Help and Comfort, to them, than they would receive even from an undred Brethren, Sifters, &c. Perfecutions are not a Part of this Promife, but Chriftians even in the midst of them fhall have the Joys of a gord Confcience, the Comforts of the Holy Spirit, and a Senfe of God's Favour, which are more valuable Bleflings an Hundred times over than the worldly oods they parted with for the fake of Chrift.
