(7) That thefe Words refpect the difpenfing the miraculous Gifts of th Holy Ghoft, as curing the Sick, giving Sight to the Blind, &c. is manife from their being joined with them. This Power the Apostles were no to make any Advantage of. Those therefore mistake them, who argu from hence against the Clergy's receiving a proper Maintenance. Th Senfe of the Words is confirmed by what the Apoftle tells us, The Lo bath ordained, I Cor.9.14, namely,That they who preach the Gospel, shouldlive the Gospel. Should any, when they enter into holy Orders, propofe to them felves no higher View, than that they may thereby be intituled to comfortable Maintenance, it may reafonably be doubted, whether th unworthy and criminal Contracts made by many Patrons, have not contri buted thereunto. But this is not all: For can their Crime be small who, being entrusted with the Patronage of Churches, make a Profit there of, by their vile Traffick? Did our pious Ancestors build and endov Churches, that Pofterity might fell them to those who are to take care o the Souls belonging to them? How many are there who bafely betra this honourable Truft, and for mean Confiderations, prefent unworth Clerks to fome of the best Livings, and the greatest Cures? Not that i is excufable to do it to the leaft. If the Buyer is perjured, [See the fortiet Canon] the Seller cannot be innocent. How can fuch Patrons free them felves from the Guilt contracted by the Negligence and ill Behaviour of tho they prefent? Did they ufe fuch Diligence to find out fit Perfons, as they ufe in what they believe to be of Moment to themfelves, they migh hope to be free from the Guilt of those they prefent, fhould they prov unworthy! But what they can hope, who have bafely betrayed one o the greatest Trufts, I fee not. Does God threaten that he will require the Blood of his People at the Watchman's Hand, because he did not warr them? And can they think to escape, who carelessly, or negligently, or ou

And will he not execute Vengeance on thofe who have it in their Power to place fufficient Shepherds over them, but fuffer themselves to be prevailed with, either by the Love of Money, or other corrupt Confiderations, to prefent thofe who are immoral, or infufficient? The Laws of Men may be evaded, but God cannot be deceived, and he will not be mocked.
