(1) To render thefe Words, Ordained to eternal Life, favours the Notion of those who fancy, That there is a certain fixed Number of Perfons abfolutely ordained by God to eternal Life. The Confequence of which Opinion is, that the refidue, which are the much greater Part of Mankind, are abfolutely ordained to eternal Destruction. But is not this to make the infinitely wife and good God the Author of the Mifery of thofe that perifh? which therefore cannot be true; for the Scriptures moft exprefly teach, that God defires not the Death of a Sinner, and that every one's deftruction is not of God, but from himself. On this Oc cafion obferve, that we may be certain, that every Interpretation of Scripture, which makes God to be wanting to his Creatures, or to act inconfift ently with thofe natural Notions he has impreffed of himself upon our Minds, is certainly falfe, whatever plaufible Reafons may be offered to bring over undifcerning People to the Belief of it; for no Senfe of Scripture can be true, but that which is confiftent with God's being a wife, holy, juft and good Being. I am therefore as certain that God hath
