CENSUS OF CITIES AND TOWNS.

Under the new census, the cities and towns of the United States, which contain a population exceeding 5,000, will range in the following order :

ARRIVAL AND CLOSING OF MAILS.

AT NEW-YORK.

ARRIVE.

NORTHERN. Early every morning by steam-boat during the navi. gation of the river; and at 2, P. M. by land, when the river is closed. EASTERN. Daily at half past 11, A. M.

SOUTHERN. Daily at 6, A. M.

CLOSE.

NORTHERN. At half past 3, P. M. every day except Sunday, by steam-boats; and when the navigation is suspended, at 7, A. M.

EASTERN.-At 5, A. M. by land every day, and an extra for Boston and Providence by Providence steam boats at 3, P. M.

SOUTHERN.-Daily at 2, P.M.; and an extra for Philadelphia daily at 5, A. M.

AT ALBANY.

The mails which leave Albany in the morning are closed at 8 o'clock the previous evening.

The Western mails by the way of Utica and other places are made up twice every day.

AT UTICA.

A morning and evening mail daily, East and West. cuse, the other via Manlius and Auburn.

One via Syra More than one hundred regu lar stages leave Utica every week.-The usual hour of closing the mail is 8, P. M.

A stage leaves Utica for Albany at 9, A. M.-one at 3, P. M. and one at 9, P. M.

RATES OF POSTAGE.

As established by act of Congress of 3d March, 1825, and the amendatory act of 2d March, 1827.

Double letters, or those composed of two pieces of paper, are charged with double those rates.

Triple letters, or those composed of three pieces of paper, are charged with triple those rates.

Quadruple letters, or those composed of four pieces of paper, are charged with quadruple those rates.

All letters, weighing one ounce avoirdupois, or more, are charged at the rate of single postage for each quarter of an ounce, or quadruple postage for each ounce according to their weight; and no letter can be charged with more than quadruple postage, unless its weight exceeds one ounce avoirdupois.

The postage on Ship letters, if delivered at the office where the vessel arrives, is six cents; if conveyed by post, two cents in addition to the ordinary postage.

Newspaper Postage.

For each newspaper, not carried out of the State in which it is pubfished; or if carried out of the State, but carried not over one hundred miles,

Small pamphlets, containing not more than half a sheet royal, are charged with half those rates. Eight pages quarto are rated as one sheet and all other sizes in the same proportion.

The number of sheets which it contains, must be printed or written on one of the outer pages of every pamphlet or magazine to be sent by mail. Where the number of sheets is not truly stated, double postage is charged.

Every thing not coming under the denomination of newspapers or pamphlets, is charged with letter postage.

Letters to Canada are forwarded through the agents of the United States at Kingston, Upper Canada, and Montreal, Lower Canada.
