Matthew the publican; James the son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, whose surname was Thaddeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas 4

Thomas.] See verse 2. and chap. iv. 18. 21. Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him (Jesus). John xi. 16. Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days, again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands, and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord, and my God! Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed; blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John xx. 24-29. After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples, at the sea of Tiberias, and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. John xxi. 1, 2.

Matthew the publican.] As Jesus passed forth from thence (his own city), he saw a 'man named Matthew sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me: and he arose, and followed him. Mat. ix. 9. As he (Jesus) passed by, he saw Levi the Bon of Alpheus, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. Mar. ii. 14. After these things he went forth, and saw a Publican named Levi sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said unto him, Follow me. Lu. v. 27. See verse 2.

James the son of Alpheus.] Among "which" ("those who were beholding the crucifixion afar off") was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. Mat. xxvii. 56. See verse 2, and com. He (Peter) beckoning unto them (the disciples) with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go, shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. c. xii. 17. After they had held their peace (and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul), James answered saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me (pronouncing sentence in favour of the Gentiles). Ac. xv. 13.

And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly, and the day VOL. II.

following Paul went in with us unto James, and the elders were present. Ac. xxi. 17, 18. After three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days; but other of the apostles saw I none, save James, the Lord's brother. Ga. i. 18, 19. And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Ga. ii. 9. James, a servant of God, and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. Ja. i. 1.

Lebbeus.] See verse 2. "Judas" ("Lebbeus"), not Iscariot, said unto him (Jesus), Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? John xiv. 22. Jude the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called. Jude 1.

4 Simon the Canaanite.] See verse 2, and

com.

And Judas Iscariot.] One of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him. Mat. xxvi. 14, 15, 16. Then Judas which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. Mat. xxvii. 3. See verse 2.

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests to betray him unto them. And immediately, while he (Jesus) yet spake (saying, He that betrayeth me is at hand), came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude, with swords and staves, from the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders. Mar. xiv. 10. 43. Then (when the chief priests sought to kill Jesus) entered Satan into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. Lu. xxii. 3. 47. Have not I chosen you twelve (said Jesus), and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon; for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve. John vi. 71. Supper being ended (the Devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him), Jesus answered (being asked who should betray him), He it is to whom I shall give a sop,

N

5 Iscariot, who also betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, 6 and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to

when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. John xiii. 2. 26. And after the sop, Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest do quickly. Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him; for some of them thought because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast, or that he should give something to the poor. He then, having received the sop, went immediately out, and it was night. John xiii. 27-30 Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place (the garden beyond the brook Cedron), for Jesus oft-times resorted thither, with his disciples. Judas then having received a band of men and officers, from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also which betrayed him stood with them. John xviii. 2-5. Men and brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. It is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein; and his bishoprick let another take. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barnabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. Ac. i. 16. 20. 24, 25.

5 Sent forth.] The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain nobleman, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding. Mat. xxii. 2, 3. He sent "them" ("his disciples") to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. Lu. ix. 2. After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Lu. x. 1. Peace be unto you (said Jesus to his disciples), as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? John vii. 35. They of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost; for they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized which have received the Holy Ghost, as well as we ? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Ac. x. 45-48. The apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, Thou wentest into men uncir. cumcised, and didst eat with them. But Peter rehearsed the matter (of his vision is the city of Joppa) from the beginning; when they heard these things they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Ac. xi. 1-4. 18. And he (Jesus of Nazareth at Paul's conversion) said unto me (Paul), Depart, for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth; for it is not fit that he should live. And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air, the chief captain commanded that he should be brought into the castle. Ac. xxii. 21-24. For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. Ro. xv. 18, 19. Ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Christ Jesus; for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews; who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 The. ii. 14, 15, 16.

Of the Samaritans.] And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria, instead of the children of Israel; and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. And so it was, at the

the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, 7

beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slew some of them. Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria, came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord. 2 Ki. xvii. 24, 25. 27, 28. And (Christ) sent messengers before his face; and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elias did? Lu. ix. 52, 53, 54. Then cometh he (Jesus) to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. The woman of Samaria (saith) unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain (said the woman), and ye say, That in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Ye worship ye know not what; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews; but the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John. iv. 5. 9. 22, 23, 24. Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. Saul was consenting unto "his" ("Stephen's") death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem, and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Ac. viii. 1. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. Ac. viii. 5.

6 Gorather.] I am not sent (said Jesus) but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she (the woman of Canaan) and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me; but he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. Mat. xv. 24-26. And (Jesus) said unto them (his disciples), Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and

remission of sins should be preached in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Unto you (the Jews) first, God having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Ac. iii. 26. Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you (the Jews); but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Ac. xiii. 46. And when "they" ("the Jews") opposed themselves (to Paul), and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean : from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. Ac. xviii. 6. I (Paul) shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Ac. xxvi. 20. And when "they" ("the Jews at Rome") agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word: Well spake the Holy Ghost, by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing, ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing, ye shall see, and not perceive for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. Ac. xxviii. 25-28. Have " they" ("the Jews") stumbled that they should fall? God forbid ! but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fulness? For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead? Ro. xi. 11, 12. 15.

The lost sheep of the house of Israel.] See chap. ix. 36. The Son of man is come to save that which was lost. How think ye? If a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? Mat. xviii. 11, 12. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant, for I do not forget thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 176. All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Is. liii. 6. My people hath been lost sheep;

8 saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse

their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting place. Je. 1. 6. Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away; first the king of Assyria hath devoured him, and last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. Je. 1. 17. And they (Israel) were scattered because there is no shepherd, and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. As I live, saith the Lord God, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock, I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick. But I will destroy the fat and the strong, I will feed them with judgment. Ez. xxxiv. 5, 6. 8. 16. And he (Jesus) spake this parable unto "them" ("the Pharisees"), saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost until he find it? And when he hath found it he layeth it on his shoulders rejoicing, and when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends, and his neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it; and when she hath found it she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise I say unto you, There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Lu. xv. 3-10. For ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned unto the shepherd and bishop of your souls. 1 Pe. ii. 25. See chap. xv. 24.

7 Preach, saying, &c.] See chap. iv. 17. and com. When Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. Mat. xi. 1. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. Is. Ixi. 1. Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. Jon. iii. 2. They (the disciples) went out, and preached that men should repent. Mar. vi. 12. Jesus said unto him (that asked to go and bury his father before he followed him), Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 60. The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Lu. xvi. 16. The priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon "them" (" Peter and John"), being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Ac. iv. 1, 2.

The kingdom of heaven is at hand.] See chap. iii. 2. Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before “you” (“the priests and elders"). Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you (the Jews), and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Mat. xxi. 31. 43. And they (the disciples) departed, and went through the towns, preaching the Gospel, and healing every where. Lu. ix. 6. As Peter was coming in (to the house), Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. Ac. x. 25. Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which con cern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no man forbidding him. Ac. xxviii. 30, 31.

8 Heal the sick.] See verse 1, and com. Heal the sick that are "therein" ("in the city that receiveth you," said Jesus to his disciples). Lu. x. 9. If we (Peter and John) this day be examined (said Peter to the rulers and eiders of the people) of the good deed done unto the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. And now, Lord (prayed the church of Christ), be hold their threatenings (of the council of the Jews), and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak the word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. Ac. iv. 9, 10. 29, 30. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people, (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch and of the rest durst no man join himself to them, but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added

to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women:) insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds, and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. Ac. v. 12-15. ·

Freely ye have received, freely give.] He (Naaman, the leper) returned to the man of God (Elisha), he and all his company (having dipped himself seven times in Jordan, and been cleansed of his leprosy), and came and stood before him; and he said, Behold now, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel: now, therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it, but he refused. But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought, but as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. And he (Elisha) said unto him (who had taken from Naaman two talents of silver, and two changes of garments), Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, &c.? The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow. 1 Ki. v. 15, 16. 20. 26, 27. Peter said (to the lame man), Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. Ac. iii. 6. When Simon (the sorcerer) saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God; repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee; for I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Ac. viii. 18–23. I have coveted (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) no man's silver, or gold, or apparel; yea, ye yourselves know that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more

blessed to give than to receive. Ac. xx. 33, 34, 35.

9 Neither gold, nor silver.] And (Jesus) commanded them (his disciples) that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse. Mar. vi. 8. Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money, neither have two coats apiece. Lu. ix. 3. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes. Lu. x. 4. When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now he that hath a purse let him take it, and likewise his scrip; and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one; for I say. unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me (saith Jesus), And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. Lu. xxii. 35, 36, 37. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk thereof? It is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. He that ploweth should plow in hope, and he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things, live of the things of the temple; and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained, that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. 1 Co. ix. 7. 9, 10, 11. 13, 14.

10 Scrip for your journey.] Then (when he advised him to consult Samuel where to find his father's asses) said Saul to his servant, But behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What have we? 1 Sa. ix. 7. And he (David, going to combat with Goliath) took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smoooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, which he had, even a scrip, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine. 1 Sa. xvii. 40.

Two coats.] He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none. Lu. iii. 11. The cloak that I left at Troas, when. thou comest bring with thee. 2 Ti. iv. 13.
