teach in the name of Christ), answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree: him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a prince and a saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. Ac. v. 29-33. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he (Stephen) spake. Ac. vi. 10. I think myself happy, king Agrippa (said Paul), because I shall answer for myself this day before thee, touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews. Ac. xxvi. 2. The Lord stood with me and strengthened me, but all men forsook me. 2 Ti. iv. 17.

you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into. 1 Pe. i. 12. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of old spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Pe. i. 21.

Your father which speaketh in you.] Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or wherewithal shall we be clothed? For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. Mat. vi. 32. All these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Lu. xii. 30, 31, 32.

21 The brother shall deliver up the brother.] See verses 34, 35, 36. And then (when ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake) shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. Mat. xxiv. 10. Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide; keep the door If ye of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law: a man's enemies are the men of his own house. Mi. vii. 5, 6. It shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the Lord; and his father and mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. Zec. xiii. 3. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son, and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. Mar. xiii. 12, 13. Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: for from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Lu. xii. 51, 52, 53. Ye shall be betrayed both by parents and brethren and kinsfolks and friends, and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. Lu. xxi. 16, 17.

20 But the Spirit, &c.] See preced. com. The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue (said David in his last words). 2 Sa. xxiii. 2. David himself said by the Holy Ghost, the Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. Mar. xii. 36. then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Lu. xi. 13. I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Lu. xxi. 15. And "they" ("the disciples") were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Ac. ii. 4. Then Peter (when he was set in the midst), filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people and elders of Israel (avouching the cure of the impotent man in the name of Jesus). Ac. iv. 8. He (Stephen) being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Ac. vii. 55, 56. And when "they" ("who came to hear Paul" in his lodging) agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, saying, Go unto this people and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive. Ac. xxviii. 25, 26. Unto "whom" ("the prophets") was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us, they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the Gospel unto

parents.] David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold my son, which came forth out of my bowels, seeketh my life; how much more now may this Benjamite (Shimei) do it? Let him alone, for the Lord hath bidden him. 2 Sa. xvi. 11. Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men ; and I will arise and pursue after David this night; and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only. And I will bring back all the people unto thee. The man whom thou seekest is as if all returned; so all the people shall be in peace. And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. 2 Sa. xvii. 1-4. All my inward friends abhorred me, and they whom I loved are turned against Job xix. 19.

me.

22 Shall be hated of all men.] Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you; and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. Mat. xxiv. 9. Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word, Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out, for my name's sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified; but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the Lord that rendereth recompence to his enemies. Is. lxvi. 5, 6. Blessed are ye when men shall hate, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Lu. vi. 22. The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth; because I testify of it that the works thereof are evil. John vii. 7. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. But if ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John xv. 18, 19. I have given "them" ("the disciples") thy word (holy Father, said Jesus), and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. John xvii. 14. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. 1 John iii. 13.

For my name's sake.] See verse 39. and chap. v. 11.

But he that endureth to the end.] He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mat. xxiv. 13. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days; but go thou thy way till the end be, for thou shalt rest and stand in thy lot at the end of the

days. Da. xii. 12, 13. He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mar. xiii. 13. That (seed) on the good ground are they, which, in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. Lu. viii. 15. "Who" ("God") will render to every man according to his deeds. To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life. Ro. ii. 6, 7. Let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Ga. vi. 9. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end. He. iii. 14. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the end. He. vi. 11. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Ja. i. 12. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Jude 20. 21. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth, saving he that receiveth it. And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations. Re. ii. 7. 10. 17. 26. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Re. iii. 21.

23 When they persecute you, &c.] See chap. ii. 13. and iv. 12. Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. Mat. xii. 14. Bat when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence, and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all. Mat. xii. 15. And (they in the synagogue) rose up, and thrust him (Jesus) out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong; but he passing through the midst of them went his way, and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught

city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his 24 lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and 25

them on the sabbath days. Lu, iv. 29-31. After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. John vii. 1. They sought again to take him; but he escaped out of their hand, and went away again beyond Jordan, into the place where John at first baptized, and there he abode; and many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle, but all things that John spake of this man were true; and many believed on him there. John x. 39-42. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death; Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. John xi. 53, 54. And Saul was consenting unto his (Stephen's) death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout all the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Ac. viii. I. Their laying await was known of Saul, and they watched the gates day and night to kill him. Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket. Ac. ix. 24, 25. The Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts; but they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. Ac. xiii. 50, 51. They (Paul and Barnabas) were ware of it (the intention of the Gentiles and Jews to stone them), and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about; and there they preached the Gospel. And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him he rose up, and came into the city, and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. Ac. xiv. 6, 7. 19, 20. And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea. But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also and stirred up the people. And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea; but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. Ac. xvii. 10. 14. After the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and

embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia. Ac. xx. 1.

Till the Son of man be come.] Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Mat. xvi. 28. As the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh. Mat. xxiv. 27. 30. 44. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Mat. xxv. 13. Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mat. xxvi. 64. And they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds, with great power and glory. Mar. xiii. 26. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth. Lu. xviii. 8. Then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with power and great glory. Lu. xxi. 27. See chap. xxiv. 28.

24 Disciple is not above his master.] Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house to eat and to drink? As thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. 2 Sa. xi. 11. The disciple is not above his master, but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Lu. vi. 40. The servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. John xiii. 16. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. John xv. 20. Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us; and let us run with patience the race that is set before us; looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. He. xii. 1, 2. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds, ye have not yet resisted

the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his 26 household? Fear them not therefore; for there is nothing covered,

unto blood, striving against sin. He. xii. 3, 4.

25 If they have called the master of the house.] See chap. ix. 34. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me; and I seek not mine own glory; there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death. John viii 48-52. He hath a devil and is mad (said many). John x. 20.

26 Fear them not.] See verse 28. The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are bold as a lion. Pr. xxviii. 1. The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. Pr. xxix. 25. Fear thou not (said God to his church), for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Is. xli. 10. 14. Fear not (O Jacob), for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by name; thou art mine: when thou passest through the waters I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Is. xliii. 1, 2. Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law.

Fear ye

not the reproach of men; neither be ye afraid of their revilings; for the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool, but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation. Is. li. 7, 8. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass, and forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth, and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? And where is the fury of the oppressor? Is. li. 12, 13. Be not afraid of their faces (said God to Jeremiah), for I am with thee, to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Thou, there

fore, gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee; be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them; for behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. Je. i. 8. 17, 18. And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions; be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. Ez. ii. 6. Now when they (the council) saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled, and they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. Ac. iv. 13. 18, 19. But, and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye, and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled. 1 Pe. iii. 14.

For

For there is nothing covered, &c.] There is nothing hid which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. Mar. iv. 22. nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid that shall not be known and come abroad. Lu. viii. 17. Beware "ye" (Christ's " disciples") of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy; for there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed; neither hid that shall not be known. Lu. xii. 1, 2. Therefore, whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets, shall be proclaimed upon the house-tops. Lu. xii. 3. Thus it is written, That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the utter most part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Co. iv. 5.

that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye 27 hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. And fear 28 them not which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul:

27 I tell you in darkness.] And he (Jesus) spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow, &c. And the disciples came and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven; but to them it is not given. Therefore speak I to them in parables, because they seeing, see not; and hearing, they hear not, neither do they understand. But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. All these things (the parables of the sower, of the tares, of the grain of mustard seed, of the leaven, of the hidden treasure, of the pearl of great price, and of a net cast into the sea, &c.) spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables, and without a parable spake he not unto them; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Mat. xiii. 3. 10, 11—16, 17. 34, 35. Unto you it is given (said Jesus to his disciples) to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Lu. viii. 10. These things have I spoken unto you (Christ's disciples) that ye should not be offended. Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth, for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak and he will shew you things to come. John xvi. 1. 13. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs; but the time cometh when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. John xvi. 25. 29. Seeing, then, that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech. 2 Co. iii. 12.

That preach ye upon the housetops.] dom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets; she crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn ye at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you; I will make known my words unto Pr. i. 20-23. Doth not wisdom cry?

and understanding put forth her voice? She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths: she crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors, Unto you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men; O ye simple, understand wisdom, and ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. Pr. viii. 1–5. Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. Did not we straitly command you (said the high priest to the apostles) that ye should not teach in this name? And behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Ac. v. 20. 28. Now while Paul waited for them (for Silas and Timotheus) at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Ac. xvii. 16, 17.

28 Fear them not which kill the body.] See ver. 26. Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. Is. viii. 12, 13. I, even I, am he that comforteth you. Who art thou that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man, which shall be made as grass? Is. li. 12. Thou, O "king” (Nebuchadnezzar) hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image, and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king (having threatened them), O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter if it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king: but if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Da. iii. 10-12. 16-18. I say unto you, my friends, be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do; but I will forewarn
