answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those 5 things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight,

everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore, and to build Jerusalem, unto the Messiah the Prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself. And the people of the Prince that shall come, shall destroy the city and sanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Da. ix. 24-26. Afterward shall the children of Israel return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days. Hos. iii. 5. It shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also upon the servants, and upon the hand-maids, in those days will I pour out my Spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens, and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered; for in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. Joel ii. 28-32. In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old. That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this. Am. ix. 11, 12. And Saviours shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's. Ob. 21. But thou Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. v. 2. Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy, the King of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee; thou shalt not see evil any more. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not, and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he

:

will rejoice over thee with joy, he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Zep. iii. 14-17. I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of Hosts. Hag. ii. 7. The Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in behold, he shall come saith the Lord of Hosts. Mal. iii. 1. Unto you that fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings. Mal. iv. 2. Woman, believe me (said Jesus to the woman of Samaria), the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. John iv. 21. Those men, when they had seen the miracle (of Christ feeding five thousand) that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. John vi. 14. When Christ cometh (said many of the people) will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? Others said, This is the Christ; but some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was! John vii. 31. 41, 42.

He that should come.] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord, &c. Ps. cxviii. 26. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Mat. xxi. 9. Mar. xi. 9. Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Lu. xix. 38. This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. John vi. 14. Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. John xii. 13. Yet s little while and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. He. x. 37.

5 Blind receive their sight.] See chap. ix. 30; xxi. 14. In that day (of the Lord) the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. Is. xxix. 17, 18. He (Jesus) found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor: he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. Lu. iv. 18. He cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits, and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them (John's disciples), Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard, how the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. Lu. vii. 21, 22. Now when be

and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

(Jesus) was in Jerusalem at the passover in the feast day, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles which he did. John ii. 23. No man (said Nicodemus) can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. John iii. 2. I have greater witness than that of John (said Jesus), for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. John v. 36. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. Though ye believe not me, believe the works, that ye may know and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. John x. 25. 38. Believe me for the very work's sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do. John xiv. 11, 12. Ye men of Israel (said Peter on the day of Pentecost), hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know (him ye have taken and crucified, &c.) Ac. ii. 22. If we (said Peter and John) this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. Ac. iv, 9, 10.

And the lame walk.] Great multitudes came unto him (Jesus), having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them, insomuch that the multitude wondered when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see; and they glorified the God of Israel. Mat. xv. 30, 31. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. Mat. xxi. 14. A certain man, lame from his mother's womb, was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple, which is called beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I to thee; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk; and he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up; and immediately his feet and ancle bones

received strength; and he leaping up, stood and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. Ac. iii. 2-8. And there sat a man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked the same heard Paul speak; who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. Ac. xiv. 8-10. The lepers are cleansed.] See chap. viii. 1-4; x. 8. When the king of Israel had read the letter (from the king of Syria), he rent his clothes, and said, Am I a god, to kill and make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man (Naaman) of his leprosy? And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him (Naaman), saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. Then went he down and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God. And his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 2 Ki. v. 7, 8. 10. 14.

And the deaf hear.] Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears. Is. xliii. 8. He (Jesus) hath done all things well (said the people), he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. Mar. vii. 37. Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee (said Jesus) come out of him, and enter no more into him. Mar. ix. 25.

The dead are raised up.] See chap. ix. 24, 25. And he (Jesus) came and touched the bier (on which the son of the widow of Nain lay), and they that bare him stood still; and he said, Young man, I say unto thee, arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak; and he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us, and that God hath visited this people. Go your way, and tell John (said Jesus to John's disciples) what things ye have seen and heard. The dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. Lu. vii. 14-16. 22. He (Jesus) cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. John xi. 43, 44

And the poor have the gospel preached to them.] See chap. v. 3. The meek shall eat and be satisfied; they shall praise the Lord

6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

that seek him; your heart shall live for ever. Ps. xxii. 26. He shall deliver the needy when he crieth, the poor also, and him that hath no helper. He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. Ps. lxxii. 12, 13. Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord. Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the whole of the pit whence ye are digged; look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you, for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. For the Lord shall comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places, and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Is. li. 1-3. (The Lord hath anointed me) to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. xi. 2, 3. I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, oh poor of the flock. Ze. xi. 7. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. Lu. iv. 18. Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? Ja. ii. 5.

6 Blessed is he, &c.] See chap. v. 3-12. and com. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Ps. i. 1, 2.

Whosoever shall not be offended.] Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. Mat. xiii. 55-57. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying? (in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men); but he answered, and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone; they be blind leaders of the blind and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Mat. xv. 12-14. Woe unto the world because of offences! for

it must needs be that offences come; but woe
to that man by whom the offence cometh!
Mat. xviii. 7. Then shall many be offended,
and shall betray one another, and shall hate
one another. Mat. xxiv. 10. All ye shall be
offended because of me (said Jesus) this night,
for it is written, I will smite the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered
abroad. Mat. xxvi. 31. And he (Christ)
shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of
stumbling, and for a rock of offence, to both
the houses of Israel, for a gin, and for a
snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And
many among them shall stumble, and fall,
and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
Is. viii. 14, 15. And Simeon said unto Mary
his (Jesus') mother, Behold, this child is set
for the fall and rising again of many in Israel,
and for a sign which shall be spoken against.
Lu. ii. 34. And he (Jesus) said unto them
(that were in the synagogue), Ye will surely
say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal
thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in
Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And
he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet
is accepted in his own country; but I tell
you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in
the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut
up three years and six months, when great
famine was throughout all the land; but
unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto
Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that
was a widow. And many lepers were in
Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet;
and none of them was cleansed, saving Naa-
man the Syrian. And all they in the syna-
gogue, when they heard these things, were
filled with wrath, and rose up, and thrust him
out of the city, and led him unto the brow
of the hill whereon their city was built, that
they might cast him down headlong. Lu.
iv. 23-29. Many therefore of his disciples
when they had heard this, said, This is a hard
saying (except ye eat the flesh of the Son of
man, and drink his blood, ye have no life
you), who can hear it? When Jesus knew in
himself that his disciples murmured at it, he
said unto them, Doth this offend you? From
that time many of his disciples went back.
and walked no more with him. John vi. 60,
61. 66. Others said, This is Christ, but some
said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath
not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh
of the seed of David, and out of the town of
Bethlehem, where David was? John vii. 41,
42. They (Israel) stumbled at that stumbling
stone; as it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion
a stumblingstone, and rock of offence, and
whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed. Ro. ix. 32, 33. The Jews require
a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom
but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews
a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolish-

And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes 7 concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? 8 A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what went ye out for to see? 9 A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For 10

ness. 1 Co. i. 22, 23. The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Co. ii. 14. And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? Then is the offence of the cross ceased. Ga. v. 11. The stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pe. ii. 7, 8. See chap. xxvi. 31.

7 Jesus began to say unto the multitudes.] And when the messengers of John were de'parted, he began to speak unto the people concerning John; What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. For I say unto you, among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of them. Lu. vii. 24-30.

What went ye out into the wilderness, &c.] See chap. iii. 1-5. and com. Take heed therefore how ye hear; for whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. Lu. viii. 18. Jesus turned and saw them following, and saith unto "them" ("John's two disciples"), What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou? John i. 38. He (John) was a burning and shining light; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. John v. 35.

A reed shaken with the wind.] Reuben (said Jacob), thou art my first-born; unstable as water, thou shalt not excel. Ge. xlix. 3, 4. When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea, yea, and nay, nay? But as God is true, our word toward you was not

yea and nay. 2 Co. i. 17, 18. Be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. Ep. iv. 14. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. Ja. i. 6.

8 A man clothed in soft raiment.] See chap. iii. 4. Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot; and he (Isaiah) did so, walking naked and barefoot. Is. xx. 2. Even unto this present hour (said Paul) we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place. 1 Co. iv. 11. In journeyings often, in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. 2 Co. xi. 27. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. Re. xi. 3.

And

9 A prophet.] See verses 13, 14. when he (Herod) would have put him (John) to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. Mat. xiv. 5. I say unto you (said Jesus to his disciples), that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto "him" ("John”) whatsoever they listed; likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. Mat. xvii. 12, 13. I also will ask you one thing (said Jesus), which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say from heaven, he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? But if we shall say of men, we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. Mat. xxi. 24, 25, 26. And they (the disciples) asked him, saying, Why say the Scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say unto you, that Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. Mar. ix. 11, 12, 13. "He" ("John," said the angel to Zacharias) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink, neither wine nor strong drink; and he

this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger 11 before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he 12 that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And

shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And thou child (said Zacharias) shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. Lu. i. 15, 16, 17. 76.

10 Of whom it is written.] See chap. iii. 3. Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple; even the messenger of the covenant whom ye delight in. Behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. iii. 1. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Mal. iv. 5. As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Mar. i. 2. What went ye out for to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Lu. vii. 26, 27.

11 Born of women.] Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble; he cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth as a shadow, and continueth not. And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one. Job xiv. 1-4. What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Job xv. 14. How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Job xxv. 4. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. li. 5. You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins; among whom also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ep. ii. 1. 3.

A greater than John the Baptist, &c.] See chap. iii. 11. I said indeed (said God) that "thy" (“ Eli's”) house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever. But now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

1 Sa. ii. 30. He (John) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. Lu. i. 15. What went ye out for to see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. I say unto you, among those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Lu. vii. 25. 28. He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. John v. 35. See chap. xiv. 2.

He that is least in the kingdom of heaven.] See chap. v. 19. Moreover, the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun; and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. Is. xxx. 26. In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David, and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. Zec. xii. 8. Whosoever shall receive this child (said Jesus) in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me; for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. Lu. ix. 48. John bare witness of him (Jesus), and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for he was before me. He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. John i. 15. 27. He (Jesus) must increase, but I (John) must decrease. John iii. 30. If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. 1 Co. vi. 4. I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Co. xv. 9. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. Ep. iii. 8.

Greater than he.] This (if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink) spake he (Jesus) of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; for Jesus was not yet glorified. John vii. 39. Many resorted unto him (Jesus), and said, John did no miracle; but all things that Jolin spake of this man

were true.

John x. 41. Now to him that is
