talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood 47 without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to 48 speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told

Scribes; and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, all these things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: for I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Mat. xxiii. 32-39. Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled. Mat. xxiv. 34. I will send them prophets (said God) and apostles; and some of them they shall slay and persecute: that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation. Lu. xi. 49, 50, 51. And when he (Jesus) was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes: for the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side; and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 4144. If I had not come and spoken to them (said Jesus), they had not had sin; but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin; but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. John xv. 22, 23, 24. Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for, but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded, (according as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear,) unto this day. And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a recom

pence unto them. Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. Ro. xi. 7-10. Ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Christ Jesus; for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews; who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us. And they please not God, and are contrary to all men: Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway; for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 Th. ii. 14, 15, 16.

46 Yet talked to the people.] When his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him; for they said, He is beside himself. There came then his brethren and his mother, and standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him; and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren; for whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother. Mar. iii. 21-35. Unto "you" (“his disciples") it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain, which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And he answered, and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. L. viii. 10. 19. 20, 21.

His brethren stood without.] His brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas, and his sisters, are they not all with us? Mat. xiii. 55. Is not this (Jesus) the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? Mar. vi. 3. After this he went down to Capernaum, he and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples, and they continued there not many days. John ii. 12 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. Neither did his brethren believe in him. But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. John vii. 3. 5. 10. “These all” (“the apostles") continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with

him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he 49 stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will 50

the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Ac. i. 14. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 1 Co. ix. 5. Other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. Ga. i. 19.

48 Who is my mother.] See chap. x. 37. The multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? Mar. iii. 32, 33. And he (Jesus) said unto "them" ("Joseph and his mother"), How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. Lu. ii. 49, 50, 51. When they (at the marriage in Cana of Galilee) wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. John ii. 3, 4. Henceforth know we no man after the flesh; yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 2 Co. v. 16.

49 His disciples.] Go quickly (said the angel to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary), and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee : there shall ye see him; lo, I have told you. Mat. xxviii. 7. He (Jesus) looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren. Mar. iii. 34. I have given unto "them" ("which thou gavest me out of the world") the words which thou gavest me. And they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them; I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. John xvii. 8, 9, 20. Touch me not (said Jesus to Mary Magdalene), for I am not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father; and to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. Then the same day, at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors shut where the disciples were asser fear of the Jews, came Jesus and

midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. John xx. 17-20.

50 Do the will of my Father.] See chap. vii. 20, 21. This is my beloved Son (said the voice from the cloud of transfiguration) in whom I am well pleased, hear ye him. Mat. xvii. 5. Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother. Mar. iii. 35. My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. Lu viii. 21. It came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea, rather blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Lu. xi. 27, 28. Jesus answered and said unto them (the Jews), This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent; this is the will of him that sent me, That every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day. John vi. 29. 40. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. John xv. 14. Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren like unto me. Him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you; and it shall come to pass, that every soul which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Ac. iii. 22, 23. Sirs (said the keeper of the prison to Paul and Silas), what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Ac. xvi. 30, 31. The times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent. Ac. xvii. 30. Whereupon, O king Agrippa (said Paul), I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision; but shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Ac. xxvi. 19, 20. In Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love. Ga. v. 6. In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. Ga. vi. 15. Put off the old man with his deeds, and put on the new man which is renewed in knowJoe, after the image of him that created Where there is neither Greek, nor cumcision, nor uncircumcision, bar

of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

CHAPTER XIII.

1 THE same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea

barian, Scythian, bond nor free; but Christ is all in all. Col. iii. 9, 10, 11. And (Christ) being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. He. v. 9. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Ja. i. 21, 22. He that hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sin; that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh, to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1 Pe. iv. 1, 2. The world passeth away, and the lust thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John ii. 17. This is his (God's) commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us. 1 John iii. 23, 24. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Re. xxii. 14.

The same is my brother.] Verily I say unto you (said the king in the description of the last judgment), Inasmuch as ye have done it (fed the hungry, clothed the naked, &c.) unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Again), verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Mat. xxv. 40. 45. Be not afraid (said Jesus to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary), go, tell my brethren, that they go into Galilee, and there they shall see me. Mat. xxviii. 10. I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ps. xxii. 22. Go to my brethren (said Jesus to Mary Magdalene), and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God. John xx. 17. Whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren. Ro. viii. 29. Both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified, are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of thy church, will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again,

Behold, I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil: and deliver them, who, through fear of death, were all their life-time subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. He. ii. 11-17. See chap. xxviii. 10.

And sister.] Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse (saith Christ to his Church), how much better is thy love than wine, and the smell of thine ointments than all spices? A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. Can. iv. 9, 10. 12. I am come unto my garden, my sister, my spouse (saith Christ to his Church). Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled; for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. Can. v. 1, 2. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles? 1 Co. ix. 5. I am jealous over you with godly jealousy; for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 2 Co. xi. 2. Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church, and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. Ep. v. 25, 26, 27.

And mother.] When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy Son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. John xix. 24. 27. Entreat the elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity. ] Ti. v. 2.

CHAP. XIII.-1 Sat by the sea side.] He (Jesus) went forth again by the sea side, and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. Mar. ii. 13. He began again to teach by the sea side; and there was

side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so 2 that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in 3 parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when 4

gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship and sat in the sea, and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. Mar. iv. 1.

2 Great multitudes.] See chap. iv. 25. Great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet. Mat. xv. 30. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. When much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable. A sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock, and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Lu. viii. 4—8.

So that he went into a ship.] There was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. Mar. iv. 1. And he entered into one of the ships (of the two standing by the lake Gennesaret) which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. Lu. v. 3.

3 In parables.] See verse 10-13. 34, 35. 53. Jesus answered and spake unto them in parables, and said (the parable of the marriage of the king's son). Mat. xxii. 1. Now learn a parable of the fig-tree: when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh. Mat. xxiv. 32. The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us; but the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us. And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us. And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the

cedars of Lebanon. Now, therefore, if ye have done truly (said Jotham to the Shechemites) and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have done well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands (for my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian, and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother); if ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal, and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech. Ju. ix. 8-20. And the Lord sent Nathan unto David, and he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor; the rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock, and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. 2 Sa. xii. 1-7. I will incline mine ear to a parable, I will open my dark saying upon the harp. Ps. xlix. 4. I will open my mouth in a parable, I will utter dark sayings of old. Ps. lxxviii. 2. Now will I sing to my well-beloved a song of my well-beloved, touching his vineyard. My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: and he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein; and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men

he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and

of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my
vineyard. What could have been done more to
my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Where-
fore, when I looked that it should bring forth
grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now
go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vine
yard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and
it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall
thereof, and it shall be trodden down. And
I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned, nor
digged; but there shall come up briers and
thorns; I will also command the clouds that
they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard
of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and
the men of Judah his pleasant plant; and he
looked for judgment, but behold oppression;
for righteousness, but behold a cry.
1-7. Son of man, put forth a riddle (said
the Lord to Ezekiel), and speak a parable
(the parable of the two eagles and vine) unto
the house of Israel, &c. Ez. xvii. 2. Then
said “I” (“Ezekiel”), Ah, Lord God! they
say of me, Doth he not speak parables?

him, and sent him away empty. And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled. And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some, and killing some. Having yet therefore one son, his well-beloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir, come let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours; and they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. What shall therefore the Lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And have ye not read this Scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, is become the head of the corner? This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. Mar. xii. 1—12. Unto you it is given (said Jesus to his disciples) to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Lu. viii. 10. Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable (of the good man of the house who would have watched if he had known what hour the thief would come) unto us, or even to all? Lu. xii. 41. And he spake "this parable" unto them (" that of the lost sheep"), saying, What man of you having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders rejoicing; and when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. Lu. XV. 3-6. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs. But the time cometh when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs; but! shall shew you plainly of the Father. John xvi. 25.

xx. 49. Utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God, Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it (shewing the destruction of Jerusalem). Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones. Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein, &c. Ez. xxiv. 3-5. In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled, he hath changed the portion of my people. Mi. ii. 4. Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against "him" (" a proud man”), and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! How long! And to him that ladeth himself with thick clay. Hab. ii. 6. And he (Jesus) called them (the Scribes) unto him, and said unto them, in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? Mar. iii. 23. And he taught them many things by parables. And said unto them, Know ye not this parable? And how then will ye know all parables? And with many such parables (as A sower went forth to sow.] Behold, there the seed which groweth imper- went out a sower to sow.
