daughter was made whole from that very hour. And Jesus departed 29 from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. And great multitudes came 30 unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when 31 they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed and his whole house. John iv. 50-53.

29 And came nigh unto, &c.] Departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. Mar. vii. 31.

Unto the sea of Galilee.] See chap. iv. 18. Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruled from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, &c. Jos. xii. 3. Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan in Galilee of the nations. Is. ix. 1. As he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. Mar. i. 16. There came other boats (besides that into which Jesus had entered with his disciples) from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks. John vi. 23. Went up into a mountain.] See chap. v. 1.; xiii. 2.

30 Great multitudes came unto him.] chap. iv. 23, 24: xi. 4, 5; xiv. 35, 36. And when they (Jesus and his disciples) were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was; and whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment; and as many as touched him were made whole. Mar. vi. 54-56. And they that were vexed with unclean spirits (came to Jesus): and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him; for there went virtue out of him, and he healed them all. Lu. vi. 18, 19. In that same hour (when John's disciples were sent unto Jesus) he cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits, and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Lu. vii. 21. God wrought special miracles by the hand of Paul, so that from his body were brought unto the sick, handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases

departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Ac. xix. 11, 12.

31 The dumb to speak.] See chap. ix. 33. The maimed to be whole.] If thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands, or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire. Mat. xviii. 8. If thy hand offend thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Mar. ix. 43. When thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city (said the master of the marriage feast in the parable), and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. Lu. xiv. 13. 21.

The lame to walk.] See chap. xi. 5. And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: the same heard Paul speak, who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet; and he leaped, and walked. Ac. xiv. 8-10.

And they glorified, &c.] See chap. ix. 8. Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me : whoso offereth praise glorifieth me. Ps. 1. 15. 23. Immediately (as Jesus said arise) he (the sick of the palsy) took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion. Mar. ii. 12. And there came a fear on all (when he raised to life the widow's son at Nain), and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us, and that God hath visited his people. Lu. vii. 16. One of " them" (" the ten lepers"), when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks; and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering, said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. Lu. xvii. 15–18. And immediately (when Jesus had said, Receive thy sight) “he” ("the blind beggar of Jericho") received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God; and

32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat and I will not send them 33 away fasting, lest they faint in the way. And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilder34 ness, as to fill so great a multitude? And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few

all the people when they saw it gave praise unto God. Lu. xviii. 43. Then again called they (the Jews) the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner. John ix. 24.

God of Israel.] Thy name (said the angel that wrestled with Jacob) shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel, for as a prince hast thou power with God, and with men, and hast prevailed. Ge. xxxii. 28. And he (Jacob) erected there an altar, and called it, Elelohe Israel (i. e. God, the God of Israel): Ge. xxxiii. 20. Then went up (into the mountain) Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel; and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. Ex. xxiv. 9, 10.

32 Jesus called his disciples.] See chap. ix. 36; xiv. 14. Jesus had compassion "them" ("the two blind men of Jericho"), and touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight. Mat. xx. 34.

In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. Mar. viii. 1, 2. Have compassion on us and help us (said the father of him who had the dumb and deaf spirit). Mar. ix. 22.

I have compassion on the multitude.] We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was, in all points, tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He. iv. 15.

Three days.] See chap. xii. 40. We remember (said the chief priests, &c.) that that deceiver said, while he was yet live, After three days I will rise again. Mat. xxvii. 63. While the day was coming on, Paul besought them all (that were in the ship with him in his dangerous voyage to Rome) to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. Ac. xxvii. 33.

And have nothing to eat.] See chap. vi. 32, 33. Seek not ye (said Jesus) what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. Lu. xii. 29, 30.

Lest they faint in the way.] Jonathan heard not when his father (Saul) charged the people with an oath (saying, Cursed be the that eateth any food until evening), wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened. Then answered one of the people and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day: and the people were faint. Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land. And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Ajalon; and the people were very faint. 1 Sa. xiv. 27–31. And "they" ("David and his four hundred men”) found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water. And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins; and when he had eaten his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk any water three days and three nights. 1 Sa. xxx. 11, 12. If I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way; for divers of them came from far. Mar. viii. 3.

33 Whence should we have so much bread.] See chap. iv. 4. Moses said, The people among whom I am are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for to suffice them? Nu. xi. 21, 22. Give ye them to eat (said Jesus to his disciples). And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat. Mar, vi. 37. From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? Mar. viii. 4, 5. Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. John vi. 5. 7.

To fill so great a multitude.] See chap. xiv. 15. We have no more but five loaves and two fishes, except we should go and buy meat for all this people. Lu. ix. 13. There is a lad here which hath five barley-loaves and two small fishes; but what are they among so many (said Andrew to Jesus)? John vi. 9. 34 How many loaves have ye ?]

little fishes. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on 35 the ground. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and 36 gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: 37 and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. And they that did eat were four thousand men, besides 38 women and children. And he sent away the multitude, and took 39 ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Mat. xvi. 9. 11.

Few little fishes.] And while they yet believed not for joy (at Jesus' appearing among them), and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. Lu. xxiv. 41, 42. As soon as they (the disciples) were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. John xxi. 9, 10.

35 To sit down on the ground.] See chap. xiv. 19. They (the people) sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. Mar. vi. 40. Make them (said Jesus) sit down by fifties in a company. Lu. ix. 14. Make the men sit down (said Jesus). Now there was much grass in the place. John vi. 10.

36 And gave thanks, &c.] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. Mat. xxvi. 26, 27. As soon as ye be come into the city (said the young maidens to Saul and his servant, seeking Samuel), ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice: and afterwards they eat that be bidden. 1 Sa. ix. 13. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. Lu. xxiv. 30. Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down, and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. John vi. 11. And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of

them all, and when he had broken it he began to eat. Ac. xxvii. 35. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. Ro. xiv. 6. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Co. x. 31. The Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving. 1 Ti. iv. 3, 4.

37 All eat.] See verse 33. See chap. xiv. 20, 21. He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Ps. cvii. 9. He hath filled the hungry with good things. Lu. i. 53.

Seven baskets full.] Do ye not understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up; neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Mat. xvi. 9, 10. They (the four thousand) did eat and were filled, and they took of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. Mar. viii. 8. When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand? Mar. viii. 19, 20, 21.

39 He sent away the multitude.] See chap. xiv. 22. And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. Mar. viii. 10.

CHAP. XVI.-1 Pharisees.] See chap. iii. 7; v. 20; ix. 11; xii. 14. The Scribes and the Pharisees (said Jesus) sit in Moses' seat. Mat. xxiii. 2. The next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying,

:

2 sired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be 3 fair weather for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the 4 signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign 5 of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten 6 to take bread. Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and be7 ware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. And

Sir, we remember, that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Mat. xxvii. 62, 63.

Sadducees.]

See verse 6. 11. and chap. iii. 7, 8. The same day came to "him" ("Jesus") the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection. Mat. xxii. 23. Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection. Lu. xx. 27. Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation. Ac. v. 17.

A sign from heaven.] See chap. xii. 38, 39. When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower, and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat, and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Lu. xii. 54, 55, 56. Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven. John vi. 31.

2 When it is evening.] See "A sign from heaven," preced. com.

30 ye hypocrites.] See chap. vii. 5. and xv. 7. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Mat. xxiii. 13. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. Lu. xi. 44. Thou hypocrite (said Jesus to the ruler of the synagogue), doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? and ought not this woman (who was bowed together with an infirmity), being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? xiii. 15, 16.

The signs of the times.] See chap. iv. 23. and xi. 25. Of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do: the heads of em were two hundred. 1 Ch. xii. 32.

4 Wicked and adulterous generation.] See chap. xii. 39, 40. Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, there shall no sign be given unto this generation. Mar. viii. 12. Save yourselves from this untoward generation (said Peter on the day of Pentecost). Ac. ii. 40.

But the sign of the prophet Jonas.] Jonah was in the belly of the fish (which the Lord had prepared to swallow him) three days and three nights. Jonah i. 17. This is an evil generation; they seek a sign. And there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet; for as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. Lu. xi. 29, 30.

And he left them, and departed.] See chap. xv. 14. My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh. Ge. vi. 3. Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them. Ho. ix. 12. And "they" ("the Gadarenes") began to pray him to depart out of their coasts; and when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the Devil prayed him that he might be with him. Mar. v. 17, 18. And he (Gallio the deputy of Achaia) drave them (Paul and his accusers) from the judgment-seat.

5 Were come to the other side.] He left them, and entering into the ship, again departed to the other side. Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. Mar. viii. 13, 14.

6 See verse 1. and com.

Take heed.] Take heed and beware of covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Lu. xii. 15.

The leaven, &c.] See verse 12. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread, even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses; for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this self-same day have I brought your

Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto 8 them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses; for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. Ex. xii. 15-19. No meat offering which ye shall bring unto the Lord shall be made with leaven, for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey in any offering of the Lord made by fire. Le. ii, 11. Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod. Mar. viii. 15. Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Lu. xii. 1. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened; for even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. 1 Co. v. 6, 7, 8. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Ga. v. 9. Shun profane and vain babblings, for they will increase unto more ungodliness; and their word will eat as doth a canker. 2 Ti. ii. 16, 17.

7 They reasoned, &c.] They reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand, have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? And do ye not remember (the miracles of the loaves, &c.)? Mar. viii. 16, 17, 18. See Lu. ix. 46. Rise, Peter; kill, and eat (said the voice in the vision). But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. Ac. x. 13, 14.

8 When Jesus perceived.] Jesus did not commit himself unto 66 them" ("the Jews"), because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man; for he knew what was in man. John ii. 24, 25. Now are we sure (said his disciples) that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee; by this we believe that thou

camest forth from God. John xvi. 30. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his (God's) sight. But all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. O fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he (Jesus) expounded unto them (the two disciples going to Emmaus) in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Lu. xxiv. 25, 26, 27. As many as I love I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent. Re. iii. 19.

The five loaves, &c.] See chap. xiv. 17–21. 10 The seven loaves, &c.] See chap. xv. 34-38. How many loaves have ye (said Jesus)? and they said, Seven. manded the people to sit down upon the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them. And they had a few small fishes, and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat and were filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand, and he sent them away. Mar. viii, 5-9. See verse 37.
