all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto 24

And healing all manner of sickness.] When the even was come they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils, and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Mat. viii. 16, 17. And as ye go (said Jesus to the twelve), preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers; raise the dead; cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give. Mat. x. 7, 8. Go and shew John again those things (said Jesus to John's disciples) which ye do hear and see; the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached to them. Mat. xi. 5. Great multitudes came unto him (Jesus), having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them; insomuch that the multitude wondered when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see, and they glorified the God of Israel. Mat. xv. 30, 31. Bless the Lord, O my soul, who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases. Ps. ciii. 3. And he (Jesus) came and took her (Simon's wife's mother, sick of fever,) by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils; and all the city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many that were sick of divers dis>eases, and cast out many devils, and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. Mar. i. 31-34. He healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues. Mar. iii. 10. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them unto him, and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many of them, crying out and saying, Thou art Christ, the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ. Lu. iv. 40, 41. And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. Lu. v. 17. And he (Jesus) came down with them (the twelve disciples), and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea, and

Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. Lu. vi. 17. Go your way (said Jesus to John's disciples), and tell John what things ye have seen and heard, how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached; and blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me. Lu. vii. 22, 23. And the people when they knew it (that he went aside privately into a desert place near Bethsaida) followed him; and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. Lu. ix. 11. Heal the sick (said Jesus to the seventy disciples) that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Lu. x. 9. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people, insomuch that they brought forth the sick in the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits, and they were healed every one. Ac. v. 15, 16.

24 His fame went throughout, &c.] And the fame hereof (of having raised the ruler's daughter) went abroad into all that land. (Having cured two blind men, Jesus charged them, saying, See that no man know it), but they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. Mat. ix. 26. 31. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus. Mat. xiv. 1. The Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country. Jos. vi. 27. He (Solomon) was wiser than all men, than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all nations round about. 1 Ki. iv. 31. And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions. 1 Ki. x. 1. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee; and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 14. And he charged "him" (the “leper") to tell no man; but so much the more went there a fame abroad of him, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. Lu. v. 15.

Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. 2 Sa. viii. 6. This taxing (by a decree from Cæsar Augustus) was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. Lu. ii. 2. They" (the "apostles and elders, with the whole Church") wrote letters by them (Paul and Barnabas, &c.) after this manner: The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia. Ac. xv. 23. And he (Paul) went through Syria and Cilicia confirming the churches. Ac. xv. 41.

All sick people.] See verse 23. And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever; and he touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she arose and ministered unto them. Mat. viii. 14, 15. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Mat. ix. 35. If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God (said Moses), and wilt do that which is right, and wilt give ear unto his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of those diseases upon thee which I have brought upon the Egyptians. For I am the Lord that healeth thee. Ex. xv. 26.

Possessed with devils.] As "they" (the "blind men" restored to sight) went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. Mat. ix. 32. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. Mat. xii. 22. And behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. Mat. xv. 22. And Jesus rebuked the devil (that possessed the lunatic whom his father brought, saying, I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him), and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour. Mat. xvii. 18. And when he (Jesus) was come out of the ship (into the country of the Gergesenes), immediately there met him, out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit. And he (the unclean spirit) cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God! I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not! And he (Jesus) asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion, for we are many! And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine (a herd of which was feeding nigh unto the mountains), and forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits

went out and entered into the swine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea (they were about two thousand), and were choked in the sea. And they (of the city having heard it) came to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind, and they were afraid. Mar. v. 2. 7. 9. 12. 13. 15. And in the synagogue (at Capernaum) there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth; art thou come to destroy us. I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God! And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and hurt him not. Lu. iv. 33-35. And when he (Jesus) went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee Jesus, thou Son of God, Most High? I beseech thee, torment me not (for he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man). And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion, because many devils were entered into him. And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain, and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them, and he suffered them. Then went the devils out of the man and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. Then they (of the city and country having heard it) went out to see what was done, and came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind, and they were afraid. Lunatick.] Lord, have mercy on my son (said the father of the lunatick), for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for oft-times he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. Mat. xvii. 15.

Those that had the palsy.] Lord, my servant (says the centurion) lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus

AND seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and 1 when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his 2

said unto the centurion, Go thy way, and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. Mat. viii. 6. 13. Behold, they brought to "him" ("Jesus") a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? for whether is easier to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, Arise, and walk: but that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (then saith he to the sick of the palsy), Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and de

parted to his house. But when the multitude saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. Mat. ix. 2-8.

25 Followed him.] And (Jesus) seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain; and when he was set, his disciples came unto him. Mat. v. 1. And when the sabbathday was come, he began to teach in the synagogue; and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Mar. vi. 2. And he (Jesus) came down with "them" ("his twelve apostles"), and stood in the plain, and the company of his apostles, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. Lu. vi. 17.

Decapolis.] And he (who had been possessed)

departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all men did marvel. Mar. v. 20. And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. Mar. vii. 31.

His disciples came unto him.] See com. on verse 18. And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers: and he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men: and they straightway left their nets and followed him. And going on from thence he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them; and they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. Mat. iv. 18-22. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles, &c. &c. Lu. vi. 13.

And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio (the deputy of Achaia), said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong, or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews (for which they brought Paul to the judgment-seat), reason would that I should bear with you. Ac. xviii. 14. And (pray) for me (said Saint Paul), that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gospel. Ep. vi. 19.
