Excerpt from George Washington

In this old homestead upon Bridges Creek, on the 22d of February, in the year 1732, was born George Washington. He came into the world as a young Englishman, and his parents and friends had no idea whatever that he would or could, in process of time, become anything else. Nobody then dreamed that a new nation was to be constructed out of the feeble English colonies that lined the Atlantic shore and that dared not push inland much beyond the points where the great rivers ceased to rise and fall with the tides. Forty-four years later there was to be a great deal more good material to make anation out of. This baby in the Virginia cradle was to grow up with the country, and know all aboutlitl and was to get the love and confidence of its people: as he grew. He was born in precisely the place and under the exact circumstances best adapted for build ing him up into the man that was sure to be needed in the year 1776. The entire structure of society was English, and was intensely aristocratic. The idea of the equality of all men, one with another.
