TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOHN LORD ELDON,
LORD HIGH CHANCELLOR OF GREAT BRITAIN,
ETC. ETC. ETC.
MY LORD, WHEN I first ventured to send an Edition of these Reports into the world, a diffidence of my pretensions, and an apprehension of bringing a discredit upon any one, to whom I might address it, discouraged me from publishing it under the protection of any name.
But the favourable reception with which this work has been honoured, and the good opinion which your Lordship has been pleased to entertain of it, have excited in me a hope that my endeavours may not have been entirely unsuccessful; and have encouraged me with less apprehension humbly to offer to your Lordship, as a small mark of my respect and veneration, the result of those labours, which were begun and considerably proceeded in during the time your Lordship presided in the court of Common Pleas, with so much honour to yourself, and advantage to the community.
As your Lordship is one of those characters who are as solicitous for the concealment, as the performance of good actions, I shall not avail myself of this occasion to dwell upon your Lordship’s distinguished qualities and talents, but beg leave to subscribe myself with the greatest sincerity and respect,
THE FIRST PART.
