In the following attempted exposition of the Scripture doctrine of the Holy Eucharist, I have found it impossible to do justice to the subject without investigating the views entertained by Roman Catholics on the question of transubstantiation; and, that I might not be charged with misrepresenting their views, I have taken them from what I conceive to be the highest and most unexceptionable authority, namely, the second and revised edition of the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth lectures on "The Principal Doctrines and Practices of the Catholic Church," by the late Cardinal Wiseman. It did not fall within my scheme to notice the preliminary lectures, and, therefore, I have not troubled my reader with any observations upon them.
