THE INTERMEDIATE GEOGRAPHY PHYSICAL, INDUSTRIAL, AND COMMERCIAL BY THE REV. ALEX. MACKAY, LL.D. F.R.G.S. AUTHOR OF FACTS AND DATES;' MANUAL OF MODERN GEOGRAPHY; 'ELEMENTS OF PREFACE. Of the many Teachers who have patronised this series of School Geographies, not a few have assured the Author that, hitherto, there existed far too great a gap between the 'Outlines' and the 'Elements'-a gap so wide that the pupil who had sufficiently mastered the former, was by no means prepared to enter intelligently on the study of the latter. Accordingly, no pains have been spared to produce an intermediate work, less meagre than the Outlines,' and less copious than the 'Elements.' The work now issued, however, possesses several characteristics peculiar to itself. The type is much bolder and more inviting than that employed in any of the Author's minor geographies. The physical and comparative characteristics of the different continents have received more attention than heretofore. Much labour has been bestowed on everything connected with the British Isles, India, and the British Colonies. But the principal feature of the book is the special attention which has been paid to the Industry and Commerce of all nations. HATTON PLACE, EDINBURGH, |
