A CASE OF PERICOLITIS FROM PERFORATION OF THE DESCENDING COLON. BY WM. S. MAXWELL, M.D., of Still Pond, Kent Co., Md. John S., æt. 10 years, was in perfect health until March 13, 1885, when he was seized with violent pains in the left hypochondriac and lumbar regions. I saw him on March 16th and found the pain paroxysmal in character; tongue dry; bowels constipated; no appetite; pulse 129; temperature 102° F. I prescribed quinia and calomel with aconite for the fever and an oleaginous mixture to move his bowels. Morphia and chloroform were used to relieve pain. On the following day a considerable quantity of blood was found in the stools, the other symptoms remaining unchanged. I suspected typhoid fever as there was slight tenderness over the left lumbar region and added Ol. terebinth to the medicines prescribed. This treatment was continued until the 21st at which time I left my patient, to all appearance, cured. He continued comparatively free from pain until April 7th, his appetite and strength improving. At this date I was called and found that some of the symptoms had returned. The paroxysms of pain were more severe and frequent ; the tongue assumed a strawberry appearance; the pulse ranged from 100 to 120; the temperature from normal to 102.5°; and there was occasional swelling over the descending colon. The treatment consisted chiefly of opiates and counter irritation. Autopsy 30 hours after death confined to abdominal cavity; the peritoneum was inflamed and the cavity filled with pus and feces which had escaped from an abscess cavity behind the gut. The colon was perforated at about the middle of the descending portion, the opening through. its walls communicating with the abscess. LIST OF PRESIDENTS-1799-1885. Upton Scott, 1799-1801.
