The Swiss cities of Lucerne, Zurich and Basle were visited in the course of journeys between other points, but little of interest for record was noted. They have some good compressed asphalt pavements and usually employ the same heavy granite block found elsewhere. In Zurich there was observed the repaving of a street with close-fitting granite blocks set on a cushion of sand with concrete foundation, the joints being subsequently cement grouted. Aside from the asphalted streets, the pavements are usually of the Belgian block type without foundation and with wide sand joints or water-bound macadam with stone block gutters and curbs.

Switzerland has one of the best developed road systems found in Europe, almost all of its main highways between cities or through small villages being maintained in first-class condition. The mountain roads especially are constructed and kept up to a high degree of excellence on account of the large extent of motor touring traffic through the country.
