SPECIFICATION.

The excavated material, when filled into the opening, shall be beaten with a heavy beater, and shall thereafter be thoroughly soaked with water for one night before the surface is restored. In macadamized streets the metal and bottoming shall be carefully lifted and set aside. In replacing, the bottoming shall be carefully hand set at the proper level, and the metal of the requisite thickness shall be laid thereon, and, where necessary, rolled with a steam road roller. In stone or wood paved streets the blocks shall be carefully lifted and set aside, and replaced on a foundation similar to that which existed prior to the opening being made, and at the level of the adjoining paving. In streets paved with asphalte, tar-macadam, or other materials of a like nature, the paving shall be restored, at the expense of the applicant, by the Contractor who may be responsible to the Corporation for the maintenance of the street, with paving of a material of the same kind as that lifted and laid at the proper levels on a foundation similar to that which previously existed. All additional materials necessary for the satisfactory completion of the work shall be provided.

No tunnelling allowed except with special permission.

No connections between the sewer and drain pipe must be formed unless under the supervision of the Master of Works.

Provision must be made for carrying on the work in such a manner that the traffic is not interfered with, and in streets where tramways are laid it should, if possible, be done during the night, when the cars are off.

In order to prevent danger the greatest care must be taken to keep clear of all rails and electric ducts in connection with the tramway system. Intimation to be sent to the Tramway Manager, 46 Bath Street, previous to any work being commenced which might interfere with or closely approach these rails and ducts.
