Spiritual Senses of the Word of God, as founded upon the Science of Correfpondence. No. IV. By the Rev. AUGUSTUS CLISSOLD, M.A., formerly of Exeter College, Oxford.

"Sterling grew to regard an intelligent theory of Inspiration, and the relation between the Bible and the faith which it conveys, as the most pressing want of our Church. That it is a most pressing one is indeed certain; and such it has been acknowledged to be by those who meditate on Theology."Archdeacon Hare's Life of Sterling, p. 130.

Review.

Greek and Latin.

November 1, 1862.

N"ignorant impatience" of Greek and Latin is one of many present tokens, not of the "manhood of the world," as supposed to exist at Rugby School and Balliol College, but of the childhood of the world, or its decrepitude; of the infantine or puerile character (guilelessness apart) of its knowledge and its "wisdom."

There is nothing about which a larger amount of shallow and conceited nonsense is more glibly talked by men and women, who ought to know better, than about Greek and Latin.

And yet there is some considerable excuse for this silly talking. It is in this case as in othersgood things suffer not so much from the depreciation of ignorance or the assaults of ill-will, as from the misuse and mismanagement and unfaithfulness of friends.

Claiming, then, all and everything that is claimed by any man for Greek and Latin as the staple material of a liberal education; regarding as idle all that is said about the desirableness of teaching boys at school a variety of things, as though this were the use and the purpose of schoollife; knowing well that there is nothing which can replace, or even come into competition with, Greek and Latin for the purposes of education, that is, of training and sharpening the mind; maintaining that education and instruction are not convertible terms; for a boy may be greatly instructed but not educated at all, while a boy educated is put into the best position to be instructed with advantage and to instruct himself; claiming and knowing and affirming and maintaining all this, we allow freely and fully that when the years expended, in the case of a large and important class of English youth, upon the supposed acquirement of some knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages, of some perception of their beauty, and some grasping of their power, together with the comparative paucity and poverty of the results, and the price paid, are taken into account, there is some considerable excuse not only for ignorant, but also for deliberate, impatience

in this matter.

The man who suggests anything which shall be found upon trial to correct and better adjust these proportions, and shall thus, in an utilitarian age, help to save "Greek and Latin," by showing that

Price Is.

[blocks in formation]

The ordinary appliances of an English private or public school, and, we may add, of an English University, for introducing a young gentleman to some speaking acquaintance with Greek and Latin books have been tried so long and, with rare exceptions, have so signally failed, that it is not a little remarkable that no attempts, so to speak, should have been made to devise other appliances which might have some better success. But remarkable as it is, it is about the true account of the case. Generation after generation of boys succeed in the same school. The quantum of Greek and Latin that is carried away is not appreciable. The quale-we will not say what the quale is. And yet because, after all, English schools are, upon the whole, very fine things, teachers magnify, and parents acquiesce in, and pay the bills of, the existing status.

We are

But it is time to look about us a little. getting very thick upon the ground; and it is becoming a harder matter every day for young gentlemen to make ends meet nicely. The race of life is very fast; and if a boy is to do well he must start fair. Now no boy can well afford to part with Greek and Latin. What we mean is that every boy in a first class school would be much better with it. But what he has of it he wants good of the kind and as plenty as may be; and what he does not want is to spend more time upon learning it thoroughly than is necessary.

These are the requirements. How do our schools set about meeting and providing for them? Really it is a wonderful case. Conceive a boy being supposed to learn to express himself in Latin by writing Latin themes. Is there anything in nature or art so grotesque as a Latin theme? It is not a wise or hopeful proceeding to tell a learner to do two incompatible things at once. But this is just what is done every time that a boy is set to write a Latin theme. He is told, that is, to think out a subject, and to express his thoughts elegantly; and to do both in a language with which he is not familiar.
