A Messianic Psalm. This Psalm is fre

quently quoted in the New Testament.

The experience of the psalmist, which is graphically described herein, is frequently referred to as typical of the sufferings of Jesus, and the causeless hatred of the Jews. Compare v. 4 with John 15:25. The zeal of Jesus is typified in v. 9, as

ings of the psalmist described in v. 21 foreshadow the sufferings of Jesus (see John 19:25). While Matthew does not

quote this verse, it seems to have been in

his mind (see Matt. 27:34, 48) as de

scriptive of the sufferings of Jesus.

Verses 12, 20 are descriptive of the mockery endured by the psalmist, which prefigures the mockery of the Savior de

scribed in Matt. 27:27. Verse 26, in the light of Isa. 53 and Zech. 13:7, foreshadows the sufferings of the Savior. The Psalm cannot be interpreted as wholly Messianic, for the almost shock

are inconsistent with the meekness of

Jesus, who, while "He was reviled, reviled not again" (1 Pet. 2:23). Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the

strong similitudes in the persecutions endured by the psalmist foreshadow the

sufferings of the Savior of men.
