PREFATORY ADDRESS.

THE "Third Reading Book" contains a series of graduated reading lessons, suitable for children who can read, with some fluency, the lessons of the Second Book.

It is believed by the Editor, that, in the majority of cases, the exercises in reading which these two Books contain, will be sufficient to enable children to read, with interest and profit, the more advanced lessons of the Fourth Book and its Supplements, which will embrace a comprehensive course of useful, practical instruction.

The reading lessons selected for this Third Book have been considerably altered from their original form, in order to adapt them to the graduated character of the present series; but the sources from which they have been drawn will be found in the Table of Contents. It is strongly recommended that the Second Spelling Book should be used as a companion to this volume, and the home lessons in it be daily prescribed by the teacher.
