It has since issued a Registry of Calves, numbering 539, all of which are the direct offspring of Herd Book Stock. The Second Volume appeared in 1883, and the Cattle now entered number over 2,600. It issues an Annual Report, containing detailed official lists of the Shows held, and prizes won during the year, and also possesses a Library, a Reading Room, and an official journal, Le Bailliage, which appears weekly.

TH

THE COMMITTEE is composed of influential Farmers and Cattle-Breeders resident in each of the ten parishes, so that every part of the Island is efficiently represented.

THE GENERAL HERD BOOK OF THE ISLAND OF GUERNSEY constitutes, as its name implies, an OFFICIAL REGISTER OF PEDIGREE in which ALL PURE-BLOODED GUERNSEY CATTLE ARE ELIGIBLE FOR ENTRY. The circumstance that in the earlier parts of the work only very short pedigrees are sometimes given-and in a few cases no pedigrees at all-must not be allowed to lead to the inference that such stock are either of doubtful purity or of inferior race. Names were not given even to those obtaining prizes at the Island Shows till the year 1879. But the want of names and of written pedigrees does not prevent the breeders from having the absolute assurance that the stock they possess have been carefully bred for the best qualities, either by themselves, or by those from whom they were purchased. It would, however, serve no good purpose to endeavour to render such assurance more specific, by inventing names which were never before used, or by straining the recollection to furnish precise particulars of descent which were not at the time committed to writing. It is better in such cases to be content to start with the present generation. This is the principle adopted in the GENERAL HERD BOOK, and the entries made now will at least be a trustworthy foundation for accurate pedigrees in the future.

The growing popularity of this Herd Book will be obvious from the following list of parts published, with the entries they contain :
