The Song of Songs; translated from the original Hebrew, with a commentary, historical and critical. By C. D. Ginsbury. 8vo. This is a scholarly volume. In the Introduction, containing eight sections, the learned author discusses, the title of the book and its signification, the canonicity of the book, its design and method, its importance; gives a historical sketch of the exegesis of the book, examines and classifies the different views, treats of its author, date, and form, and enumerates exegetical helps. This portion is very full and satisfactory. The writer is especially familiar with Jewish and Talmudic literature. This is followed by a new translation, accompanied by critical and grammatical notes, in which questions of Hebrew grammar and exegesis are treated, as the text suggests them. It is not too much to say, that the writer has fully mastered his subject, and produced incomparably the best book on the Song in the English language. His view is, that the poem was intended to record an example of virtue in humble life, unseduced by the royal attractions of Solomon. He rejects the allegorical exegesis altogether.
