The hour of twelve o'clock M. having arrived, Senate took up consideration of special order-Governor's message vetoing Senate Bill No. 135— An Act authorizing Morris Wolff and others to lay down iron water pipes in any of the public streets of the Town of San Bernardino.

Upon the question, "Shall the bill become a law, notwithstanding the objection of the Governor?" the roll was called, with the following result:

Resolved by the Senate, the Assembly concurring, That Sydney Waite, County Clerk of San Bernardino County, is hereby granted leave of absence from this State for the period of four (4) months, at such times as he may select during his term of office; provided, that the said County Clerk shall leave a competent deputy to discharge the duties of said office during his absence, and obtain the consent of the Board of Supervisors of San Bernardino County for such absence.

Resolved, That Senators Maclay, Wilson and Chappell, each are bereby allowed the sum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars as mileage, while in the discharge of committee duties, to San Francisco, Oakland, San José, Santa Clara, Petaluma, Napa, Martinez and Stockton, payable out of the Contingent Fund of the Senate.

Resolved, That the select committee to whom was referred the memorial relative to woman suffrage, be and they are hereby authorized to employ a female clerk, at the same per diem as is allowed to other committee clerks, payable out of the Contingent Fund of the Senate.

Mr. Minis moved to amend by adding after the words "female clerk," "without regard to race, color or previous condition."

Upon the adoption of the amendment, the ayes and noes were demanded by Messrs. Fowler, Minis and Green, and the Senate refused, by the following vote:

Mr. Lewis moved to amend section one, by adding the following: "provided, that if said railroad company employ any Chinese or Mongolian, all rights obtained under the provisions of this Act shall be null and void."
