Senate Bill No. 554-An Act to extend the time allowed the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and the Western Pacific Railroad Company in which to make the terminus of their roads upon certain lands donated to them by the State for that purpose, in the City and County of San Francisco.

Mr. Pendegast had leave to introduce the following resolution :

WHEREAS, A certain grant of tide lands was made to the Golden City . Homestead Association by an Act of the Legislature, approved April fourth, eighteen hundred and sixty-four, entitled an Act to authorize the sale and conveyance to the Golden City Homestead Association of certain overflowed lands in the City and County of San Francisco; and whereas, there is now good reason to believe that no such association ever existed in fact, and that all the representations which were then made by interested parties, which served as the pretext for such grant, were incorrect, if not absolutely false; therefore,

Resolved, That a special committee of three be appointed, with full powers to administer oaths and require the presence of persons and production of papers, and report what action, if any, is necessary to secure to the State of California the full benefit of the land thus fraudulently granted to such so-called association.

Adopted.

At nine o'clock and forty minutes P M., on motion of Mr. Maclay, the Senate adjourned.

The President announced the appointment of the following committee, in pursuance of a resolution adopted by the Senate on yesterday, relative to the investigation into certain alleged frauds in the Act granting land to the Golden City Homestead Association: Messrs. Pendegast, Larkin

and Lewis.

PETITION.

By Mr. Wand-From citizens of the City of San Francisco, for the repeal of the mortgage tax law.

The petition was read and, on motion of Mr. Wand, the rules were suspended for the consideration of the bill to which the petition refers, to wit: Senate Bill No. 597-An Act to relieve the owners of encumbered real estate from double taxation.

Mr. Pendegast moved to postpone the consideration of the general file until one o'clock P. M.

Upon which the ayes and noes were demanded by Messrs. Roberts, O'Connor and Irwin, and the Senate refused, by the following vote:
