The members being sworn in, the Clerk announced that the first business before the Senate was the election of a temporary Speaker, and that nominations for that position would now be entertained.

Mr. Tolley nominated Hon. T. C. Long.

Mr. Carden' nominated Hon. B. W. Padgett.

There being no other nominations, the first ballot was taken. and resulted as follows:

Messrs. Cobbs, Ewing, Fairbanks, Green, Jarvis, Jones, Leech, Lewis, Lynn, McDowell, Montedonico, Norment, Padgett, Polk, Quarles, Sanford, Sparks, Thompson, Tolley, Townes, and Williamson. 21.

Senators voting for Mr. Padgett :

Messrs. Brown, Carden, Cecil, Coile, French, Kennedy, Ledbetter, Maney, Simerly and Trimble. 10.

Thereupon the Hon. T. C. Long, of the county of Madison, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared to be duly elected temporary Speaker.

The Clerk appointed Messrs. Tolley and Padgett to escort the temporary Speaker-elect to the chair.

On motion of Mr. Tolley, the rules of the last Senate were adopted to govern the Senate during its organization.

On motion of Mr. Thompson, the Senate proceeded to the election of a permanent Speaker without the formality of nominations.

The first ballot was then taken, and resulted as follows:

SECOND DAY.

The Senate met at 10 o'clock A. M., pursuant to adjournment temporary Speaker Long in the chair.

Proceedings were opened with prayer by the Rev. Dr. C. II. Strickland.

On a call of the roll all of the Senators responded.

The Journal of yesterday's proceedings was read and approved.
