The Compiler of this Catalogue addressed a letter to the Head Masters of the more important Schools in England, inviting from them a list of the Educational Works in use at their respective Establishments. The object was to show what books were practically employed by the leading Educators of the land. The response to this application has been somewhat of a disappointment. Some gentlemen have declined to furnish the information, on the ground that the books in use do not represent their own selection; others, for divers reasons not necessary to mention. The lists that follow of the Books in use at CHRIST'S HOSPITAL, ETON COLLEGE, MARLBOROUGH COLLEGE, MERCHANT TAYLORS' SCHOOL, ROSSALL SCHOOL (Fleetwood), and WELLINGTON COLLEGE are all that have been received; and they are given in the same order as they were supplied, without any attempt at classification, with the expression of the Compiler's thanks to the gentlemen who have provided the information. It should be mentioned that these books do not in every instance represent the preference of the Head Master, but that their use is often the result of long custom. Suggestions as to improvement and amplification of this portion of the Catalogue, in future editions, are invited. * The Books marked with an Asterisk are first used in the Form where they occur, but continue to be used afterwards in the Form or Forms above.
