Mr. Hunkins moved that the house do recede from its amendment to the amendment of the Council made to the 25th amendment of the house, and the question being put thereon, it passed in the negative.

So the house insisted on their amendment.

On motion of Mr. Manahan,

Ordered, That a committee of conference be appointed on all the disagreeing votes of the two houses to the said bill No. 65. The Speaker appointed Messrs. Manahan and Elmore, of the said committee.

Ordered, That a conference be requested thereon.
On motion of Mr. Hicks,

The house reconsidered the vote by which Mr. Platt had leave to make a minority report from the committee on the judiciary. The question then recurred on granting leave to Mr. Platt to make the said report; and pending the question thereon, Mr. Long moved to lay the motion on the table, which being put was agreed to.

And then on motion of Mr. Agry, the house adjourned until half past 7 o'clock P. M.

HALF PAST SEVEN O'CLOCK, P. M.

A message from the Council by their Secretary:

"Mr. Speaker-The Council have concurred in the amendments made by the house to "a memorial to Congress relative to expenses of the Legislative Assembly."

The Council have also concurred in the amendment of the house to bill No. 52, (C. F.) “ a bill in relation to dams on the Manitowoc river;" also in the amendment of the house to bill

No. 57, (C. F.) "a bill to amend the act authorizing Samuel H. Farnsworth to build and maintain a dam on the Menomonee river" also in the amendment of the house to bill No. 36, (C. F.) "a bill to repeal an act entitled an act to amend an act entitled an act to prescribe the mode of proceeding in chancery, and for other purposes, approved 18th January, 1840.

The Council have considered and have rejected bill No. 25, [H. of R.] "a bili to revive the act entitled an act for the relief of insolvent debtors, approved January 18, 1840.”

Bill No. 23, [H. of R.] "a bill to amend the 8th section of an act entitled an act to amend an act concerning justices of the peace has been indefinitely postponed by the Council."

The Council have also postponed indefinitely bill No. 39, [H. of R.] "a bill for the preservation of timber upon rivers and streams."

In relation to the disagreeing votes of the two houses on bill No. 65, [C. F.] "a bill to provide for the payment of the expenses of the Legislative Assembly," the Council will confer by committee; and have appointed for that purpose Messrs. Strong and Newland.

Mr. Manahan, from the committee of conference to which the subject was referred, made the following report:

The committee of conference to whom was referred the disagreeing votes of the two houses on bill No. 65 [C. F.] “a bill to provide for the payment of the expenses of the Legislative As. sembly," report, That they recommend to the house to recede from their second amendmeut to the bill;

To the Council to concur in the third amendment to the bill:

To the two houses to adopt as a substitute for the 11th amend. ment of the house the following:

To John Catlin for preparing the journals of the House of Representatives for publication for the sessions not heretofore

published, affixing an index thereto, and superintending the printing of the same, two hundred dollars;

To John V. Ingersoll, seventy-five dollars; and.

To John P. Sheldon, one hundred and twenty-five dollars, for preparing the journals of the Council for publication for the sessions not heretofore published, affixing an index thereto, and superintending the printing of the same;

To the House to recede from their 15th amendment;

To the Council to concur in the 20th amendment of the house, with the following amendment: strike out "two hundred and fifty dollars," and insert "one hundred and fifty dollars;" To the House to recede from the 24th amendment :

To the Council to concur in the 25th amendment of the house, with the following amendment, viz: add thereto

To Sheldon and Hyer, for 981 copies of the Wisconsin Dem. ocrat furnished the Legislative Council during the last and pres. ent sessions, fifty-eight dollars and eighty-six cents.

To Sheldon and Hyer, for incidental printing for House of Representatives from 12th April to the close of the present ses. sion, inclusive, one hundred and twenty one dollars and sixty. three cents;

To Seth Van Bergen, for furnishing, cutting and hauling to the steps of the Capitol for the use of the Legislative Assembly 5 cords of wood, thirteen dollars and fifty cents.

The report having been read, a motion was made by Mr. Hamilton that the said report of the committee of conference be recommitted to said committee.

And pending the question thereon,

The Council appeared and took seats in the Representatives '

Hall.

CONVENTION OF THE TWO HOUSES.

On motion of Ir. Newland,.

Ordered, That tellers be appointed to receive and canvass the votes for the committee to be elected under the joint resolution of the two houses entitled "Joint Resolution relative to making a settlement with the Milwaukee and Rock River Canal Company."

Messrs. Newland and Platt were appointed the tellers.

Mr. Strong then moved that both persons be elected upon the same ballot.

And the question being put, it passed in the affirmative.

Mr. Strong then nominated Messrs. Edward V. Whiton and Moses Meeker as candidates to be elected the said committee.

The ballots were then taken and counted, when Mr. Newland, from the tellers, reported that thirty-six votes had been given, and of the votes so given,

Edward V. Whiton received thirty four, Moses Meeker eleven, Mason C. Darling twenty, Albert G. Ellis one, William S. Hamilton one, Charles M. Baker one, Robert M. Long one and blank one.

Messrs. Edward V. Whiton and Mason C. Darling having received a majority of all the votes given,

The President declared that they were the choice of the convention, and had been duly elected.

On motion of Mr. Dewey,

The Convention adjourned.

The House was called to order when Mr. Platt, the teller on the part of the House appointed for the purpose, made the following report:

The tellers in the convention appointed to receive and can.

vass the votes given for the committee under the joint resolution relative to making a settlement with the Milwaukee and Rock River Canal Company," report that the number of votes given was thirty-six, that of these

E. V. Whiton received thirty-four,

Moses Meeker, eleven,

Mason C. Darling, twenty,

A. G. Ellis, one,

W. S. Hamilton, one,

J. A. Manahan, one,

C. M. Baker, one

Col. R. M. Long, one,

and blank one;

that Messrs. E. V. Whiton and Mason C. Darling having received a majority of all the votes given, were declared by the President of the convention to be duly elected the said commit

tee.

A message in writing was received from the Governor, by Mr. Charles Doty, his private secretary,

Which was read and is as follows:

"To the House of Representatives.

I have approved and signed a bill entitled "An act to make valid the official acts of Geogre McWilliams, Edwin Hart, and Lyman Crossman, justices of the peace," also a memorial entitled a "nemorial to Congress relative to the improvement of the Fox river," and deposited them in the office of the Secretary of the Territory.
