48th Rencontre Assyriologique InternationaleW. H. van Soldt, R. Kalvelagen, Dina Katz, Nederlands Instituut voor het Nabije Oosten Nederlands Instituut voor het Nabije Oosten, 2005 - 455 páginas The theme of the 48e Recontre Assyriologique Internationale held in Leiden on July 1-4, 2002 was "Ethnicity in Ancient Mesopotamia." The volume as it is published contains 36 papers which have ethnicity as their subject. Although the book is basically a collection of individual articles, almost all aspects of ethnicity have been discussed, and thus the final result amounts to more than just the sum of its parts. An important part of the volume is taken up by a session that was held on Tuesday and that dealt with the so-called Sumerian question. The session was organized by Gordon Whittaker, and 9 specialists responded to his call for papers. The result is a new evaluation from many angles of the earliest history of cuneiform script and the people and language behind it. |
