"American Ornithology has uniformly presented a highly interesting subject of investigation to Naturalists | BARBUT'S Genera Insectorum of Linnæus, illus

and liberally educated persons of all countries, even when the means of gratifying their curiosity were few and difficult of attainment. Wilson's invaluable work removed the obstacles to this attractive study, and conferred on him an imperishable renown. His ardent and perspicacious mind enabled him to exhibit the truths he discovered, in that warm, lucid, and captivating language, which never fails to reach the heart of his reader; while the faithfulness of his delineations shew most advantageously the accuracy of his pencil. We may say, without hesitation, that such a work as he has published in a new country, is still a desideratom in any part of Europe."

"The valuable Notes and interesting Life of Wilson added to this new edition are from the pen of Sir William Jardine, a Naturalist of congenial mind in feeling and talent. The plates are well executed, and the greatest possible attention has been paid to accuracy of colouring. Altogether we have rarely seen a more valuable work on Natural History, and not one more entertaining."-Lit. Gazette.

"The most delightful collection of Ornithological Biographies with which we are acquainted."

"This is by far the best edition of the American Ornithology, both on account of the beautiful plates and the interesting notes of the editor. Every ornithologist must, of course, possess the work, and he should if possible procure this edition."-Neville Wood.

As this splendid work has long been an established favourite, and is the only one of any extent published in this country on foreign entomology, the present improved edition, accommodated to the greatly advanced state of entomological science, and coloured in a very superior manner, cannot but be generally welcome. Those who have seen only the carelessly coloured copies which have occurred in the market of late years, can form no idea of the beauty of the present without inspection. It now challenges competition with the finest Entomological Works yet produced in this or any other country.

The merits of Drury's work are well known, and attested by a host of writers. The late President of the Linnæan Society, Sir James Ed. Smith, says of it, "The exquisite work of Drury displays the complete insect in a degree of perfection that leaves nothing to be desired;" Mr. Swainson in his Zoological Illustra. tions, observes, "For the very accurate and excellent figures contained in Drury's Work, the scientific are indebted to Moses Harris, a most assiduous and observing entomologist, whose memory will be long cherished by our Aurelians;" and in the last edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, the writer of the article on Entomology, declares that "Drury's Work has not been surpassed in beauty and accuracy of execution by any of the sumptuous efforts of the present day."

"The acknowledged value of the figures contained in Drury's Illustrations, and the extreme rarity of many of the Insects figured therein, will always render this work important to the entomologist. Drury's Collection was exceedingly choice and extensive, and occupied nearly thirty years in its formation; all the specimens were in the highest state of preservation, and a very considerable number unique.

"Of the estimation in which the former edition of Drury's work was held by Linnæus, Fabricius, and others, the constant reference to it will sufficiently prove. The Rev. Wm. Kirby calls it opus entomo. logicus splendidissimus,' and the late Mr. Haworth describes it as 'a most beautiful and valuable work on entomology.'

This new edition is exquisitely coloured, and must rank high among the luxurious publications of the age. Its literary and scientific excellence is in keeping with its attractive appearance.
