PREFACE.

I OFFER to American boys and girls a new history country. My hope has been to make them love the story.

In the preparation of this little book, the following have been kept in view:

I. To give an accurate and spirited Narrative of the events in our country's history from the discovery of Ar the present time.

II. To present a clear and systematic Arrangement of eral subjects, giving to every fact, whether of peace or true place and proportion in the narrative.

III. To give an Objective Representation by means o maps, and drawings, of all the more important facts of tory.

IV. To employ such a Style and Method as seem best to fix the attention of the student and to awaken his enthu

Whether I have succeeded in this work, it is not mi cide.—If success has not rewarded the effort, the failure in the execution rather than in the plan and purpose.

I surrender this NEW GRAMMAR SCHOOL HISTORY UNITED STATES to those for whose benefit it was begun been finished. I ask of teacher and student a just re of whatever worth the work may be found to possess, and itable criticism of its defects.
