the Strefs of their Salvation, upon the fame Doarine, preach'd by Chrift and his Apoftles.

8thly, The Streets of the City are pure Gold, as it were transparent Glafs. Such a City has never yet been seen in this World; but certainly fuch a City as glorious as is here defcribed, fhall be upon this Earth; because it is faid to come down from God out of Heaven. Now if the Streets of this City are to be pure Gold, of fuch a pure, bright, and excellent Nature, as it were tranfparent Glafs: Sure, then this can mean no other but the Beatifick Vifion, which the Saints will have at this time, of God and Chrift, with the glorious Angels, and one another: Yea, all thofe Myfteries that are to be feen, known, and understood by the Saints, concerning God, Chrift, and the Spirit, with all the Glory of Heaven, will reflect and fhine forth upon all these glorious Inhabitants, from the golden Street of this bieffed City, which will always appear bright as tranfparent Glafs unto them. O what glorious Walks will the Saints have in these golden Streets of the New Jerufalem, when they fhall walk with Honour, Pleafure, Delight, and eternal Satisfaction, from the fatisfying Objects which will be always prefented before them!

9thly, And I faw no Temple in it; that is, no material Temple, built with Hands or human Power. Such a Place will be too low for the Saints in that Day: But instead hereof, the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the Temple of it: That is God in Chrift, or God in our Nature. This is the Place where the Saints fhall meet, fee, enjoy, and have Communion with God, in the greateft Nearness that poffibly they can enjoy the Fountain of Eters nal Deity in.

1othly,

1othly, This glorious City has no need of the Sun; and it is certain it will have no need of the Moon ; because there will be no Night, but always as a bright eternal Day. The Reafon is render'd; for the Glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the Light thereof: Yet I do not understand by this as if thofe two great Lights now fo ufeful, fhould be annihilated; but it is to fhew us that God in Chrift will be fuch a Fountain of eternal Light, Love, Grace, and Glory, unto all thofe bleffed Inhabitants, as will dazzle or put out all created Lights or Creature Enjoyments whatfoever. Natural Light is fweet to the Body and Mind now; It is pleasant for the Eyes to behold the Sun. Spiritual Light is fweet and pleasant to the Soul. But O what will this Light be to the Souls and Bodies of the Saints, in that perfect State, when God and Chrift, or God in Chrift, will be an immediate Light of Fruition and Enjoyment by Vision, for

ever.

I am very fenfible that fome of God's Children, which have no Light into this bleffed Kingdom of Chrift, will expound all thefe Texts of Scripture unto the ultimate Glory of the eternal Heavens : But let us take notice of what follows, and I think we may fee enough to the contrary; and that is in the 24th Verfe; And the Nations of them that are faved, fhall walk in the Light of it, and the Kings of the Earth do bring their Glory and Honour into it. By the Nations of them which are faved, I underftand to be the Elect of God, gathered ont of all Nations and Kingdoms of the World: Yea, all the Inhabitants of the New Jerufalem fhall walk in the Light of that Glory, which will continually

fhine forth from the Throne of God and the Lamb, upon this bleffed City. By the Kings of the Earth that do bring their Glory and Honour into it, I do humbly conceive that to be fpoke prophetically of thofe Kings who fhall be converted in that Day unto Fefus Chrift; and therefore they fhall then bring their Glory and Honour into this City, and lay it down, as it were, at the Feet of Chrift, that the Crown may be fet upon his Head; they being now made Kings unto God, in a nearer and higher relation than they were before. Verfe 26. And they fhall bring the Glory and Honour of the Nations into it That is, the Saved Ones ont of the Nations, whether Kings of the Earth, or others, fhall bring their Glory, or the Glory and Honour of the Nations from whence they come, with all that is near and dear to them, into this City.

Now then, if this be fo, this cannot be underftood of the Ultimate Heaven. It is certain that no Kings of the Earth, nor any other Perfon nei ther, fhall or can bring their Glory and Honour into that Place: The Glory and Honour of the Nations cannot be brought into Heaven: I think there is none that will, or dare to fay fo. Then this glorious State spoke of in this 21ft of Revelations, with many other Places, muft be a State upon this Earth. If these things be but duely confider'd, I hope it may a little cool that Heat which does appear in the Spirits of fome, against Chrift's having aVifible Kingdom in this World.

Yet this Glory, that the Kings of the Earth, with the Glory and Honour of the Nations, which they bring into this bleffed City, will not be out of any Need or Neceffity; for if there was no need of the

Glory

Glory of the Sun nor the Moon, it is certain there will be no need of the Glory of this World to be brought into it: But upon the First Branch of Chrift's Kingdom, which will appear in the Deftiution of Amichrift, the Pouring down of the Spirit, the Converfion and Reunion of the Jews and Gentiles, and the bringing of them into their own Land, as the Scripture fpeaketh; then it is, as I humbly conceive, that thefe Words will be fulfilled; then thofe Kings and Great Men of the Nations, whofe Hearts the Lord fhall touch by the Power of his Grace; as without doubt fome fuch. fhall be converted in that great Day, will fhew and make manifeft their Love unto the Lord Jesus Chrift, and the Saints, by offering up themfelves, with what they have, yea, and all that is near and dear to them, to be the Lord's for ever. And then it is that they fhall bring their Glory and Honour into it, that is, into Jerufalem, where the People of God, both of Jews and Gentiles, fhall be gathered together, which will be the Metropolitan City. of the whole World. So that the Glory which the Kings of the Earth, with the Glory of the Nations, do bring, or in that Day fhall bring into this City, will be in the 1ft Branch of Chrift's Kingdom, or upon the firft Breaking forth of that Spiritual Glory: But will not attain unto its full Heighth and Grandeur, until Chrift's perfonal Coming from Heaven, with all the Saints: Which Time the principal Glory fpoke of in this Chapter, hath a peculiar relation

unto.

I have been longer upon the 21ft of Revelations, than I defigned; and that, because I apprehend the Glory spoke of in this Place has a refpect unto, if

not the fame with that glorious City in Ezekiel tho' that be more darkly and myftically expreffed, as having the Veil of Mofes's Types fhadowing over it. Well! When thefe glorious things Spoken of this City of God, come to be fulfilled; then it is that the Name of the City hall be, The Lord is there (Fehovah Shammah) as it is minded in the Margin; Jehovah being the proper and effential Name of God. Exod. iii. 14. I AM THAT I AM: That is as if the Lord had faid, What I am I was; and what I was, I am, and what I am, I ever will be. Thus fhall ye fay to the Children of Ifrael, Į AM hath fent me unto you; whereby the Eternity, Immutability, and Unchangeableness of God, is fignified. Well! This is the Name that the City is to be call'd by,The Lord (FehovahShammah) is there. This glorious City is to take its Name or Denomination from the Lord being there. From that Day, from that glorious Day fpoke of before, it fall then be faid in a fpecial refpect, The Lord is there.

But it may be objected, Was not the Lord with bis People before this Time? Was he not with them in the Inftitution of his divine Worfbip and Ordinances, both in the Tabernacle and in the Temple at Jerufalem where he promised his Prefence? Was he not with them, and that in a special way, during the Time of that Adminiftration? And hath not God been with bis People, in a wonderful manner, under the Difpenfa tion of the Gofpel? O yes! Bleffed be the Lord he hath, is, and will be always prefent with his Church, to the End of the World. But what then? This makes nothing against that fpecial, wonderful, and extraordinary Prefence, which is promis'd in thefe Words; when the Name of the City (from
