As an illustration: In the steam and gas engineering department, the head of the department and one instructor handle the courses in engineering thermodynamics, steam and gas engineering, refrigeration, heating and ventilation and power plants as given to mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering students. One instructor handles the courses in farm motors and still another teacher is responsible for the short courses in steam engines, gas engines, automobiles and traction engines. In a similar manner, the duties of the various instructors in the other departments are laid out so that several men handle the various applications.

There are marked differences of opinion as to the amount of time to be devoted to agricultural and engineering subjects in an agricultural engineering course. The time given to the various branches in each of the three options of the agricultural engineering course at the Kansas State Agricultural College, will be found in Table 1. The subjects in this table are arranged alphabetically and the time devoted is given in hours and in per cent. of the total time. Tables 2, 3 and 4 show the percent of time devoted to various subjects in the mechanical engineering, civil and highway engineering, and in the electrical engineering courses as offered at the same institution.

An examination of the tables shows that the time devoted to mathematics, physics, descriptive geometry and to other fundamental subjects is the same in all the engineering courses.

In the farm machinery option, 376 hours or 14.5 per cent of the total time is devoted to agriculture, farm machinery and farm motors; 388 hours or 15.1 per cent to sciences which include physics, chemistry and geology; 288 hours or 11.3 per cent to pure mathematics; 231 hours or 8.9 per cent to shop practice; 323 hours or 12.2 per cent to drawing and design, including descriptive geometry, 65 hours or 2.5 per cent to architecture; 399 hours or 15.4 per cent to general engineering subjects including applied mechanics, electricity, kinematics, hydraulics, surveying, concrete construction and highway engineering; 330 hours or 12.6 per cent to general cultural subjects including English, history, economics and business law. Besides these fixed requirements, 197 hours or 7.6 per cent of electives are allowed, the students being free to select additional subjects along agricultural or engineering lines.

The option in farm machinery is designed to fit students for positions with companies manufacturing farm machinery and farm motors. A comparison of Table 1 with Table 2 will show how this option differs from the mechanical engineering course as offered at the Kansas State Agricultural College as follows:

In the farm machinery option the time devoted to applied mechanics, heat engines, and electrical engineering subjects is about one-half of that in the mechanical engineering course. The shop practice in the two courses is in the ratio of about three to four.

In the irrigation and drainage option, 298 hours or 11.5 per cent. are given to agriculture, farm machinery and farm motors; 108 hours or 4.2 per cent to the application of irrigation and drainage; 454 hours or 17.5 per cent to sciences, including physics, chemistry, biology and geology; 288 hours or 11.1 per cent to pure mathematics; 144 hours or 5.6 per cent to shop practice; 290 hours or 11.2 per cent to drawing and design including descriptive geometry; 560 hours or 21.8 per cent to general engineering subjects including applied mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, surveying, concrete construction and foundations; 330 hours or 12.6 per cent to general cultural subjects including English, history, economics and business law. Besides the

above fixed requirements, 78 hours or 3.1 per cent of electives are allowed.

This option differs but little from the regular civil engineering course tabulated in Table 3.

The flour milling option is designed to fit men as designers of flour mill machinery and for positions of superintendents of flour mills. 310 hours or 12 per cent of the total time are devoted to flour milling subjects which include grain inspection, grain products, experimental milling, wheat and flour testing, baking tests and milling practice. 272 hours or 10.5 per cent. is given to shop practice, the time devoted to this subject being very nearly equal to that devoted by mechanical engineering students (Table 2.)

The students in this option devote 279 hours or 11 per cent to chemistry, this being equal to about twice the time devoted by the students pursuing other engineering courses.

Besides the subjects scheduled in the three options of the agricultural engineering course, each student is required to have at least six months' practical experience in the work of the option selected before he is allowed to receive a degree in agricultural engineering. From Table 3, it is evident that the primary field of agricultural engineering as applied to highway engineering is handled at the Kansas State Agricultural College as an option of the civil engineering course. This option differs from the regular civil engineering course in the following details:

Students in the highway engineering option omit spherical trigonometry, astronomy, geodosy, hydraulic machinery, water supply and sewage; and take shorter courses in railways and chemistry. In the time thus gained, they take courses in road materials, road laws and specifications, soils, and additional work in concrete construction.

The agricultural engineering course is still in the formative period and a free discussion should prove of value to those offering such courses as well as to colleges who contemplate the addition of an agricultural engineering course.
